Akwa United Aims for Third Federation Cup Title

Akwa United is set to continue their pursuit of a third Federation Cup title in eight years as they face off against EFCC Football Club in a Round of 32 games. The Promise Keepers will take on the Nigeria National League side today at the Awka City Stadium in Enugu.

The two-time champions have made it to the round of 32 after securing a 1-0 win over Wikki Tourists of Bauchi in Enugu. On the other hand, EFCC overcame Katukan Tsafe FC of Zamfara in the round of 64, setting up an exciting clash between the two sides.

Akwa United tactician Ayodeji Ayeni is expected to name a formidable team for the knockout game against the Abuja-based side. Ayeni is banking on the goalscoring exploits of his team to progress in the competition.

The Federation Cup, also known as the Nigerian FA Cup, is the oldest football competition in Nigeria and has been held annually since 1945. The competition is open to all registered football clubs in Nigeria, from amateur to professional levels.

The 2023 winner of the Federation Cup will represent Nigeria in next year’s CAF Confederation Cup competition. The CAF Confederation Cup is an annual club football competition organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for clubs in Africa.

Akwa United has a rich history in the competition, having won it twice in the past eight years. Their first triumph came in 2015 when they defeated Lobi Stars 2-1 in the final, while their second triumph came in 2017 when they defeated Niger Tornadoes 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.

The Promise Keepers have been in good form this season, having finished second in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) behind champions Plateau United. They will be looking to carry their form into the Federation Cup and add another trophy to their cabinet.

EFCC Football Club, on the other hand, will be looking to cause an upset and progress to the next round of the competition. The Abuja-based side has been in good form in the Nigeria National League and will be hoping to carry their momentum into the game against Akwa United.
