John Mulaney’s SNL return is set for 14 November 2026, with Phoebe Bridgers joining as musical guest. The booking gives the comedian a seventh turn hosting Saturday Night Live. For viewers who know his carefully shaped stand-up stories, it is another chance to see those instincts working inside a shared sketch show.
NBC’s October announcement also placed Druski and the Strokes on the 7 November episode. The two pairings bring different kinds of experience to consecutive weekends: a hosting debut for Druski, then an established return for Mulaney. They are announced bookings, rather than reports of performances that have already happened.
SNL has always accumulated stories around its writers and performers, including figures remembered in our archive of Norm Macdonald’s life and comedy career. Mulaney’s route is particularly interesting because his relationship with the programme began behind the scenes, before audiences saw him occupy the host’s position.
Returning to a place he helped write
Global, the programme’s Canadian broadcaster, recorded Mulaney’s writing years as 2008 to 2013 when announcing his first hosting appearance in 2018. That earlier account gives the new booking a clear context. He is returning to an institution he knew as a writer, as well as to a role he has since performed repeatedly.
Writing and hosting overlap, but they ask different things of a comedian. A writer can develop a character or refine the structure of a joke without being the person who delivers it. Hosting places a performer inside the audience’s immediate view, alongside a cast whose working relationships already exist.

The seventh appearance is the concrete milestone in TheWrap‘s report of the November announcement. It does not establish which sketches will return, what the monologue will cover or whether an unannounced guest will appear. Familiarity creates expectations, but a future episode still has to make its own case.
That is one reason to watch a return without treating it as a checklist of previous favourites. Notice where the host settles into the ensemble, who sets the pace and how a scene changes when someone else takes the lead. Those choices can be more revealing than counting recognisable references.
The move between familiar and unfamiliar performance settings also shaped Tracee Ellis Ross’s recent Broadway chapter. The formats are different, but the underlying question travels well: how does an experienced performer adapt to the particular demands of the room?
A live-talk-show chapter provides another comparison
Mulaney’s Netflix work offers a useful point of contrast. The service’s May 2025 account of Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney describes a twelve-episode season with Richard Kind as announcer, rotating guests and live calls. Mulaney hosted, co-ran the show and executive produced through Multiple Camera Productions.
Netflix presented that season as a continuation of the six-episode Everybody’s in L.A. project from 2024. Those are documented earlier programmes, not an announcement here of a new season or a current weekly broadcast. Looking at them together shows that live television has involved more than one arrangement for him.
A conversation with guests leaves room for an unexpected answer. A scripted sketch depends on a more tightly organised sequence. Both require listening, even when a performer has prepared extensively. The interesting comparison is how the person at the centre creates space for other people without losing the shape of the segment.

The musical guest is a separate part of the night
Bridgers is the announced musical guest for Mulaney’s episode. Her performances will be part of the same broadcast, but a shared billing does not by itself announce a comedy collaboration, a new song or a particular set list. Those details need their own confirmation rather than being supplied by fan expectation.
Collaboration can take many forms, as our account of Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman across theatre, books and podcasts illustrates. For this SNL booking, the clear information is simpler: the host and musical guest have distinct jobs within one live programme.
For a viewer outside the United States, check the authorised local broadcaster or service nearer the date. An American network announcement does not guarantee identical access everywhere. It is also useful to distinguish the complete episode from official clips that may appear separately afterwards.
What the booking adds to his story
Mulaney’s return connects three public roles: former SNL writer, recurring guest host and comedian who has experimented with live conversation on another platform. The connection is more informative than assuming every familiar face arrives to do exactly what audiences have seen before. A format can be recognisable while the working challenge changes.
The photographs accompanying this article show archive appearances, including a 2016 comedy performance and an earlier Bridgers concert. They are not advance pictures from November’s episode. The announcement supplies a date and a pairing; the pleasure of watching will be discovering what the people involved actually make of them.
