Patrick Mahomes comeback became real in the most convincing way possible Monday night, when the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback returned nine months after tearing two ligaments in his left knee and helped drive a 31-10 season-opening win over the Denver Broncos.

Mahomes threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns, and he also ran 15 yards for a score against a Denver defense that had been one of the league’s toughest units a year earlier. AP reported that he played without apparent limitations after spending the offseason working back from surgery on the ACL and LCL he tore in December.

The box score was not a vintage Mahomes passing performance, and he said as much afterward. The bigger story was that Kansas City did not need him to look perfect. He moved when the play demanded it, took contact, ran for a touchdown and finished a full game without the knee becoming the center of every decision.

Mahomes has been a regular subject on Wowplus because his career mixes elite football with the visibility of a celebrity athlete. Our earlier look at the debate around a narrow Chiefs win over Cincinnati captured how closely every Mahomes performance is examined when Kansas City is expected to contend.

Patrick Mahomes comeback was about trusting the knee again

The physical recovery began the day after the injury. Mahomes underwent surgery and then spent much of the offseason in Kansas City working with the Chiefs’ training staff rather than following his usual routine of spending more downtime in Texas.

He progressed quickly enough to participate in voluntary summer work and was fully cleared for training camp. Kansas City still kept him out of all three preseason games, which made the opener against Denver his first true test in game conditions.

The uncertainty was not whether he could throw. Mahomes had been doing that throughout camp. The difficult part was whether instinct would return when a pass rush closed around him and defenders could hit him from unpredictable angles.

That is why the touchdown run mattered beyond six points. Mahomes scrambled through the middle of the defense for 15 yards after an earlier run had been erased by a penalty. A quarterback protecting a repaired knee might have slid early or avoided the lane altogether. Mahomes trusted his movement enough to finish the play.

Kansas City gave him more help than it did last season

The Chiefs’ 2025 season was a major break from the standard Mahomes had established. Kansas City went 6-11, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and lost the AFC West after winning the division nine straight times.

That context makes the opener important. The goal is not simply to prove Mahomes can play again. The Chiefs are trying to show that the team around him has improved enough that every game does not depend on the quarterback creating something extraordinary.

Kenneth Walker III provided the strongest evidence. In his Chiefs debut, the running back rushed for 173 yards and scored twice. A productive ground game changes the shape of Kansas City’s offense because defenses cannot devote every resource to containing Mahomes and the passing attack.

Wowplus previously explored the public side of the quarterback’s life in Patrick Mahomes’ comments about Brittany Mahomes and the support behind his career. That family story sits far from game tactics, but it helps explain why his long rehabilitation became such a personal as well as professional storyline.

The offensive line passed an early pressure test

Kansas City entered the game with a problem at left tackle. Josh Simmons was unavailable, leaving undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson to start against a Broncos defense that set a franchise record with 68 sacks last season.

For a quarterback returning from major knee surgery, that matchup could have created a difficult first night. Instead, the Chiefs controlled the line well enough to run for big gains and keep Mahomes from spending the evening under constant pressure.

That protection may be one of the biggest factors in how sustainable the comeback becomes. Mahomes has always extended plays and taken calculated risks outside the pocket, but Kansas City would rather those decisions come by choice than because protection breaks down immediately.

The offensive balance also gives coach Andy Reid more ways to manage the season. If the run game remains productive, Mahomes does not need to lead the league in passing attempts for the Chiefs to score. That matters after an offseason when the priority was getting the franchise quarterback healthy for a full schedule rather than one dramatic return game.

The first hit may have been as important as the first touchdown

Mahomes acknowledged that taking contact was one of the things he had thought about before the game. Rehabilitation can recreate movement and strength, but it cannot completely reproduce the uncertainty of an NFL pocket.

Once he was hit and kept playing, some of that uncertainty disappeared. The game then became less about the injury and more about reads, timing and execution. That psychological shift is difficult to measure in statistics, yet it often separates being medically cleared from feeling fully back.

There will still be moments when the knee becomes part of the conversation, particularly if Mahomes takes an awkward hit or has a quieter game. One successful opener does not erase the normal risks of a long NFL season.

His career has also shown how quickly expectations can reset. Wowplus once looked at the less obvious parts of Patrick Mahomes’ rise, written before many of the milestones that now define him. Today, merely returning is not enough; the standard around him is whether Kansas City can become a championship-level team again.

The Chiefs now have to make Week 1 look repeatable

The victory over Denver was emphatic, but Mahomes was quick to frame it as a beginning. That is the sensible view. Kansas City still has an entire season to prove that the 2025 collapse was an interruption rather than the start of a decline.

There are encouraging signs. The run game produced explosive plays, the defense limited Denver to 10 points and the offensive line handled a difficult matchup. Mahomes did not need 300 passing yards to control the game.

The next challenge is Indianapolis on Sunday night, followed by a schedule that will force the Chiefs to keep testing the rebuilt offense. Opponents will also have fresh film showing how Mahomes moved on the repaired knee and where Kansas City’s new strengths are emerging.

Patrick Mahomes comeback could eventually be judged by playoff wins and another Super Bowl run, because that is the level his career has taught people to expect. For now, the first benchmark is simpler. He returned, trusted his body, made decisive plays and left Arrowhead with a convincing win. After nine months of rehabilitation, that was the kind of opening Kansas City needed.
