LeBron James is preparing for his 24th NBA season with a different jersey and a familiar question: how much can his experience change the team around him? At 41, the league’s career scoring leader is beginning a Philadelphia chapter rather than simply extending the story he built in Los Angeles.
The 76ers officially announced his signing in July. Their current roster identifies him as a Philadelphia forward wearing No. 23. The regular-season opener is scheduled for October 20 in New York, giving fans a few more days to separate the excitement of a famous arrival from the basketball work that follows.
At September’s media day, James emphasized learning his new teammates and bringing championship experience to their daily approach. He did not supply a retirement timetable. That makes this season interesting on its own terms: the record-breaking length of his career is established, but the shape of his next partnership still needs to be demonstrated.
Philadelphia offers a different kind of opening night
The NBA identifies the New York game as the start of James’ first regular season with Philadelphia. The milestone is extraordinary, yet an opening-night appearance cannot settle whether a new group will function well across a long schedule. Familiar names still need unfamiliar combinations to become routine.
James’ career also extends far beyond the court, as our examination of his salary, sponsorship and business interests explains. For this particular Philadelphia story, however, the useful measure will be what happens during possessions: how quickly a good opportunity is recognized and whether teammates can act on it together.
One thing to watch is who initiates an attack after a defensive rebound. If James brings the ball forward, another player can run ahead rather than wait for a handoff. If a guard starts the possession, James can arrive later and receive it against a defence already making decisions. Those are possibilities to observe, rather than a claim about a fixed coaching plan.
Another is the quality of the first pass after the defence sends extra attention towards a scorer. A simple pass delivered early can be more useful than a difficult assist attempted late. Watching the next player’s opportunity, rather than only the name attached to the basket, offers a clearer view of whether a partnership is developing.
The same caution applies to preseason highlights. A successful sequence shows what a group can do on that possession. It does not establish how often the same advantage will appear against different opponents, through a travel-heavy stretch or late in a close game. Early chemistry is worth noticing without turning it into a championship forecast.
The Olympic example shows another version of leadership
There is a recent international example of James sharing responsibility in an exceptional group. He won the men’s basketball tournament MVP award at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where the United States took gold. FIBA’s tournament account records his contribution across scoring, rebounding and passing, rather than describing a role built around one category alone.
In the semifinal against Serbia, he produced 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. A triple-double is a striking statistic, but the useful context is that different jobs still had to be done within the same game. Collecting a rebound, finding a teammate and finishing a chance are connected parts of helping a talented lineup work.
Long careers do not all end in the same way. Our coverage of Russell Westbrook’s retirement examines another veteran’s place in this NBA generation. James’ current decision is to keep playing, which shifts the question from appreciating a completed record to assessing a changing role in real time.
Paris also supplies a useful historical connection with Joel Embiid, who was part of that United States team. Their presence together in archive photographs is not evidence of a current Philadelphia practice session. It is evidence that their shared basketball history began before this NBA season, even though a full club schedule creates different demands.
For viewers, leadership can be easier to assess through repeatable details than speeches. Does a player help a teammate recognize a coverage on the next trip? Does the group recover its shape after a mistake? Are useful habits visible when a sequence fails? Those questions leave room for observation instead of assuming experience automatically produces cohesion.
Judge the season by patterns, not one evening
The first game will provide a starting point for comparison. Later games can show whether decisions become quicker, spacing becomes clearer and lineups recover more effectively when an initial action is stopped. Individual highlights matter, but a sequence repeated against several opponents tells a more useful story than one spectacular finish.
Availability and workload also belong in that assessment. A long career does not remove the ordinary demands of travel, recovery and repeated competition. Supporters should distinguish an officially announced absence from speculation and read current team updates before treating a lineup from a previous game as a promise about the next one.
James’ public life includes other outlets, including the golf channel featuring a Cavaliers reunion covered by Wowplus. The contrast is revealing: familiar relationships can carry a story off the court, while a new basketball group has to build its understanding through shared work and repeated games.
Year 24 therefore offers more than another number beside an already remarkable name. Philadelphia gives James a fresh setting in which to make his knowledge useful. The opening night will attract attention because of who he is; the weeks afterwards will show more clearly what this version of his game can help the team become.
