Former child star Amanda Bynes’ tumultuous relationship with her parents has been in the spotlight since 2003. The actress reportedly tried to seek emancipation from her parents, Rick and Lynn Bynes, which led to her father firing her agents and managers. However, what’s interesting is that Amanda also kept her plans from both of them, causing her parents to feel like their daughter had betrayed them.
Although Amanda eventually withdrew the petition, the tension between her and her parents never fully dissipated. Amanda reportedly sought solace elsewhere, finding comfort in Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider and his wife, Lisa Lillien. Lillien even shared that Amanda would often spend time with them but never left her family’s house. A source also noted that Amanda’s parents were strict and that her father was very controlling.

Things soured further in 2014 when Amanda made serious accusations against her father on Twitter, accusing him of “verbally and physically abuse [sic] to me as a child.” She retracted her statements days later, stating that “the microchip in my brain made me say those things, but he’s the one that ordered them to microchip me.” Her mother, Lynn, defended her husband against the allegations, stating that Rick was “the best father and husband a family can ask for” and that he never abused their children physically or sexually.
The recent resurgence of Amanda Bynes in the media has brought her family dynamics back into the spotlight. In a recent interview with Paper Magazine, Amanda spoke candidly about her past struggles with substance abuse, mental health issues, and her hiatus from the entertainment industry.

Interestingly, Amanda credited her mother, Lynn, with our coming back from her darkest moments. “I’m really grateful for what I went through with my sister because it made me closer with my parents because it made us all appreciate each other and our relationship more,” said Amanda.
The actress, now 34, revealed that she is moving towards sobriety, wrote a fashion blog, and has plans to return to the entertainment industry sometime in the near future. She even shared that she would love to start her own fashion line one day.
However, Amanda’s path to recovery hasn’t been without hurdles. In 2018, the actress was reportedly placed in a mental health facility sound concerns for her safety. Amanda’s mother spoke out against the rumors, stating that her daughter was “doing amazingly” and that the facility was not for mental health treatment, but rather “harmful, unsupported claims of a non-existent need for ‘therapy’ and fear for her safety.”
