Pete Davidson, the well-known comedian and former SNL star, is receiving criticism from PETA after purchasing a puppy from a breeder rather than adopting from a shelter. Although Davidson cited his family’s recent loss of their dog as a reason for buying a puppy, PETA claims that he could have done better research before making his decision.
In a statement to TMZ, PETA expressed their disappointment in Davidson’s decision, stating, “If Pete had done his research, he would know that there’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, that at least a quarter of dogs in shelters are purebreds, and that Petfinder has listings for homeless dogs of every breed under the sun, including the one he purchased.”

The nonprofit organization claims that they even spoke with Davidson about adopting a hypoallergenic dog but he was unaware that it was a possibility. Despite PETA’s efforts, Davidson went ahead with purchasing a pup, which has caused some controversy.
During his phone call with PETA, Davidson didn’t back down from the explicit voicemail he left Daphna Nachminovitch, which was leaked to the press. In the voicemail, he defended his decision to purchase a puppy rather than adopt and called PETA out for making a public example of him and his family during their time of mourning.
Davidson’s family dog, Henry, passed away in May 2023, which was part of the reason he decided to get a new puppy in the first place. In an emotional Instagram post, he revealed that his family was devastated by the loss of their beloved pet, saying, “My mom, sister and I are broken and will miss him forever. We love you Henry.”

In a recent interview with TMZ, Davidson shared that he was upset with PETA’s public criticism, saying, “I haven’t seen my mom and sister cry like that in over 20 years. I was trying to cheer up my family … Then this organization (PETA) made a public example of us, making our grieving situation worse. I am upset. It was a poor choice of words. I shouldn’t have said what I said, but I am not sorry for standing up for myself and my family.”
While Davidson’s decision to purchase a puppy rather than adopt from a shelter has sparked controversy with PETA, many are showing their support for the comedian and his family during this difficult time. Despite the backlash, Davidson has made it clear that he stands behind his decision to purchase a puppy, but perhaps he will consider adopting in the future and use his platform to advocate for shelter animals.
