Egypt Sherrod, the familiar face on HGTV, had a surprising start to her career. Before becoming a household name in the world of real estate and home improvement, Sherrod was a radio host. But her journey to HGTV was anything but conventional.

At the age of 18, Sherrod began her career in radio as a receptionist. Little did she know that her outgoing personality and sense of humor would catch the eye of the station’s producers. “So back then, if someone had a call, you had to go over the intercom and say, ‘You have a call parked on 101.’ I would just sort of have fun with that, and everyone at the station would laugh,” Sherrod explained to HGTV via House Beautiful.

It was this charisma and charm that led the production director of the radio station to see potential in her. “I think you’re ready to audition for a radio slot,” he told her. And just like that, Sherrod’s career in radio began.

Despite her success in radio, Sherrod had always been interested in real estate. “I was earning enough to start thinking about how I was going to make my money work for me. While everyone else was buying pocketbooks and shoes, I was buying properties,” Sherrod revealed to VIBE. She flipped her first property not long after its purchase and realized she had a knack for dealing with real estate.

After 20 years in the radio business, Sherrod made the transition to real estate. Little did she know that this move would eventually lead her to HGTV. Her experience in property and her passion for real estate made her a natural fit for the network’s lineup of home improvement shows.

But Sherrod isn’t the only HGTV star with an unexpected career path. Mike Jackson, known for his role on HGTV’s “Big Beach Builds,” had a career in a completely different field before making the switch to home improvement television.

Before finding fame on HGTV, Jackson worked as a firefighter. He spent 15 years in the fire service, putting his life on the line to save others. However, his passion for building and creating led him down a different path.

Jackson’s love for construction and design eventually led him to start his own building company. His expertise in construction and his dedication to creating beautiful, functional spaces caught the attention of HGTV, and the rest is history.
