In a recent interview with Gayle King, Tyler Perry spoke out in defense of Will Smith following the controversy surrounding his Oscars outburst. The outburst came after Chris Rock joked about Smith’s wife Jada’s shaved head, who suffers from alopecia, a hair loss condition.

Perry expressed his sympathy for Smith, stating that “something triggered him” and that his actions were out of character. He suggested that Smith’s childhood trauma, which he discussed in his 2021 memoir “Will,” may have played a role in his reaction. Perry, who has also been open about his own tragic childhood, explained that if trauma is not dealt with properly, it can show up at the most inappropriate times.

However, Perry did acknowledge that Smith’s actions were wrong and that Rock handled the situation like a “pure champion.” Perry also admitted that navigating the situation between his two friends had been difficult, as he is friends with both Smith and Rock.

Despite the controversy, Perry has continued to stand with Smith as he works on redeeming himself. Smith has been working hard on his upcoming film, “King Richard,” which tells the story of Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.

Perry has also been vocal about the importance of mental health and has used his platform to raise awareness and advocate for those struggling with mental health issues.
