The Real Meaning Behind H.E.R.’s ‘Better Than I Imagine’

So numerous tunes out there have to do with heartbreak. However, that wasn’t the objective at all behind pianist Robert Glasper’s single “Better Than I Imagine,” including H.E.R. and Meshell Ndegeocello. In a news release (through The Fader), Glasper stated, “‘Better Than I Imagined’ is an ardent commitment to the worth and virtue of Black love. Nobody desires a life without love. However, we have generations of individuals in our neighborhood who have not had the tools, in fact, to be in healthy relationships.”

According to Genius, the “Better Than I Imagine” lyrics begin with H.E.R. crooning about a relationship that may be worth all the challenges it deals with. “I believed it ‘d be even worse ’cause it harms me/ But still, I can’t see myself without anyone else/ ‘Cause it was much better than I pictured,” she sings. In the 2nd half of the tune, Ndegeocello’s vocals conclude the tune with a lost phone story before a huge flight. However, then, she sings, “I recognize you’re the only number I know by rote. “It’s a significant intense side in turmoil. The Fader explained the verses as”a genuine voicemail for a long-lost love.” The tune is plainly about how love can surpass expectations– even when there are some obstacles to get rid of.
