Joaquin Phoenix at 52 offers a useful moment to look beyond the role that brought him an Oscar. The actor, born on October 28, 1974, reaches his birthday with a screen career that moves between historical spectacle, music biography, intimate family drama and unsettling collaborations with distinctive directors.

Joker remains an obvious landmark, but it is only one route into his work. A birthday viewing list can connect that performance with the wounded veteran of The Master, the travelling uncle of C’mon C’mon and the small-town sheriff at the centre of Ari Aster’s Eddington.

The Oscar arrived after several different breakthroughs

The Academy records Phoenix as the leading-actor winner for Joker at the 2020 ceremony. The honour recognised a 2019 film directed by Todd Phillips. Hildur Guðnadóttir also won for its score, giving the production two awards from its eleven nominations.

His earlier nomination for Gladiator came in the supporting-actor category at the 2001 ceremony. That distinction matters to the shape of the career: he was already attracting attention within a major ensemble years before becoming the central performer carrying an entire film’s publicity and dramatic weight.

The Phoenix name also belongs to a wider acting family, whose history is explored in our feature remembering River Phoenix. Joaquin’s own body of work has developed over decades. Looking at the credited performances gives that individual career room alongside the family story surrounding it.

Music, uncertainty and a quieter journey

Walk the Line brought another leading-actor nomination, this time at the 2006 Oscars. Phoenix played Johnny Cash opposite Reese Witherspoon, who won the leading-actress award. The Academy’s record preserves both outcomes, placing the performers within a film recognised across acting, costume, editing and sound categories.

The musical biography asked audiences to recognise a famous public figure through another actor. That is a different starting point from playing an invented character whose past is gradually revealed. It is one reason a list of Phoenix’s performances contains more variety than a quick description of him as an intense screen presence suggests.

The 2013 ceremony recognised his work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were also nominated for their supporting performances. All three acting nominations underline the importance of the relationships within that film’s ensemble, rather than presenting its lead as working in isolation.

Mike Mills’s C’mon C’mon offers a different scale. A24 describes a road trip in which Johnny and his young nephew are unexpectedly thrown together. Woody Norman joins Phoenix in the cast, alongside Gaby Hoffmann and Scoot McNairy. Its 2021 release provides an accessible counterpoint to the louder public image of Joker.

The film appeared among the titles discussed in our 2021 film round-up. Revisiting an older list can uncover a performance missed during its original release. In this case, the family relationship and the journey give viewers another way to approach an actor often associated with more confrontational material.

Directors have shaped the changes in scale

Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here brought Phoenix the acting prize at Cannes in 2017. The festival also awarded Ramsay a share of the screenplay honour. Its official synopsis centres on an enforcer searching for a missing teenager, with Phoenix leading a cast that includes Ekaterina Samsonov and Alessandro Nivola.

The festival record identifies a compact 95-minute production. That makes an interesting contrast with Eddington, which A24 lists at two hours and 28 minutes. Running time is only one measure of a film, but it shows how differently projects built around the same performer can be constructed.

Eddington places a sheriff played by Phoenix opposite a mayor played by Pedro Pascal. A24 dates the story to May 2020 and describes neighbours turning against one another as the dispute escalates. Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell and Micheal Ward are among the wider cast.

Aster wrote and directed the film, which received its US theatrical release in July 2025. His earlier collaboration with Phoenix, Beau Is Afraid, is documented in the production’s Cannes press notes. Together, the projects add another continuing director relationship to a filmography already shaped by Mills, Ramsay and Anderson.

Choosing a route through the films

Availability is worth checking title by title. Our guide to Verity’s digital release explains how a rental can differ from subscription access. A film displayed inside an app may require a separate transaction, and a US listing does not establish the same arrangement in every country.

A24 currently offers a home-viewing route for Eddington, as well as physical editions. For a birthday watch, a viewer might choose the scale of that film, the family focus of C’mon C’mon or an earlier awards-recognised performance. The choice depends more on the kind of story wanted than on a single ranking of his career.

At 52, Phoenix’s established screen record resists being reduced to one mask, one award or one type of character. The films provide several entry points, from a major studio epic to a smaller road movie. His birthday is an occasion to explore that range through the work already available.
