The Olu of Warri Kingdom, HRM Ogiame Atuwatse III, installed a new Ologbotsere (Prime Minister) of the Warri Kingdom on Sunday, which resulted in controversy. The new Ologbotsere, Chief Oma Eyewuoma, a former Aboludero of the Warri Kingdom, was appointed at the palace of the monarch in Warri.

During the ceremony, the Olu of Warri Kingdom stated that “true reconciliation will not be forced on Ogiame” and that he will determine the terms of reconciliation. He also emphasized that no son or daughter of Itsekiri will hold the throne for ransom.

However, shortly after the appointment, Chief Ayirimi Emami walked out of the Olu of Warri, claiming that he was still the Ologbotsere. He showed the traditional beads and the sword presented to him by former Kings, HRM Ogiame Atuwatse II and HRM Ogiame Ikenwoli, and the Uda.

The spokesman for the Ologbotsere descendants worldwide, Alex Eyengho, later addressed the press, explaining that the Ologbotsere title is “till death.” He argued that for Emami to accept the title of his father, which is a “lesser title in the name of peace” would amount to “peace of the graveyard.”

Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayodele Joseph Oritsejafor, walked out of the meeting in protest. Meanwhile, the former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, was present and remained at the event until it ended. Other prominent Itsekiri sons, including palace chiefs, who were there, were left disappointed.
