Although Luke Perry was close to the entire Arquette family, he counted Alexis Arquette among his closest friends. The transgender actress died in 2016 after a 29-year battle with HIV, and a tearful Perry was on hand for her emotional tribute during the 2017 GLAAD Awards. “I know Alexis is with him, I believe that,” Rosanna Arquette told People after Perry’s death. “They loved each other deeply and were so close. Luke never judged Alexis just loved her as she was. And it was a gift. Luke was a good man.”

Due to his friendship with Alexis, Perry faced gay rumors during the peak of his fame, but he didn’t care. “He and Lex were friends since they were kids and I remember many years ago, the height of the 90210 craze, they all said, ‘Alexis Arquette is dating Luke. Luke is secretly gay,'” Patricia Arquette told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “And Luke said, ‘I’m not going to say that’s not true, even though Alexis and I are just best friends because that would be to say there’s something wrong with it, and there’s nothing wrong with it.'”

“Look, when you love somebody, you love them. Bottom line,” Perry explained at the GLAAD Awards. “And I loved Lex and Lex loved me, and I don’t need to explain that to anybody.”
