Barbara Eden marriage has lasted longer than many Hollywood relationships, yet people are still curious about the age difference between the I Dream of Jeannie star and her husband, Jon Eicholtz. Eden is eight years older than Eicholtz, a gap that is not particularly large, honestly, but it has received attention because the woman happens to be the older partner.
Eden, who turned 94 in August 2025, married Eicholtz in 1991. He is 86, and the couple have now spent more than three decades together. Recent photographs of them celebrating holidays and attending events suggest they remain close, comfortable and rather playful with each other. One Easter photo shared in April 2026 showed them smiling together while wearing matching bunny ears, which is perhaps not the sort of image people expect from a couple in their 80s and 90s. That might be part of why it received so much attention.
The relationship itself does not appear unusual when viewed without the numbers. They met, built a life together and stayed married. Still, relationships involving an older woman and a younger man tend to attract questions that are not always asked when the age difference is reversed.

Eden has rarely spoken about her marriage as though the age difference created a serious problem. Instead, she tends to focus on patience, support and learning to understand the other person.
While discussing the secret behind her long marriage, Eden advised couples to try walking in each other’s shoes during disagreements. Her point was fairly simple: make an effort to see the situation from your partner’s side, even when doing so is difficult. It sounds like ordinary advice, and perhaps it is, but long relationships often seem to depend on ordinary habits repeated for years rather than one grand secret.

There is also something realistic about Eden admitting that understanding another person is not easy. She later married newspaper executive Charles Fegert in 1977, but that relationship ended in 1982. She and Eicholtz married nearly a decade later, and this third marriage has become her longest.
That history matters a little. Eden did not enter her relationship with Eicholtz as a young woman still trying to discover what she wanted. Both had already experienced marriage, loss, work pressures and the normal complications of adult life. They likely knew themselves better by then, although knowing yourself does not automatically make a relationship easy.
Why older-woman relationships receive more attention
Relationship expert Susan Winter, who has written about older women dating younger men, explained that people often pay more attention to what she called a reverse age-gap relationship because it challenges traditional expectations.
An older man with a younger woman is still treated as fairly normal in popular culture. Sometimes the age difference is barely mentioned. When the woman is older, however, questions quickly appear. People wonder why the man would choose an older partner or why the woman would not date someone closer to her own age.
Those questions reveal an old assumption that a woman’s romantic value decreases as she gets older. It is not always said directly, but it sits underneath much of the public reaction. A younger man’s interest in an older woman is treated like a mystery that needs to be explained.
Winter argued that this view ignores the deeper reasons people choose partners. Attraction is part of a relationship, naturally, but so are humour, trust, lifestyle, emotional safety and shared values. Two people may simply enjoy being together. That explanation can sound almost too obvious, yet it is frequently overlooked.
In Eden and Eicholtz’s case, the eight-year gap is hardly dramatic at their current stage of life. They are both older adults who have been together since the early 1990s. Their routines, friendships and shared memories probably matter far more than the year printed on either birth certificate.
Their connection appears to be based on more than celebrity
Eicholtz has generally remained outside the entertainment spotlight. He has worked in architecture, engineering and real estate development, while Eden spent much of her life as a highly recognisable television star.
That difference may have helped their relationship. Eden already had a public career and a famous identity when they met. Eicholtz had his own profession, interests and life outside Hollywood. Neither person needed the other to create a career or public image.
According to accounts of their early relationship, Eden was not immediately certain that romance would develop. She reportedly found Eicholtz straightforward and dependable, but her feelings grew over several dates rather than during one dramatic first meeting. They talked, shared dinners and gradually became closer.
That slower beginning feels believable. Not every lasting marriage begins with instant excitement. Sometimes affection builds quietly, and the person who initially seems merely kind or interesting becomes difficult to imagine life without.
Eden also learned that Eicholtz had cared devotedly for his previous wife during her battle with cancer. A doctor who knew the family reportedly told Eden that he had remained beside his wife throughout her illness, helping with meals and daily care. It gave Eden a clearer picture of his character before they married.

Perhaps that mattered more to her than age. Someone’s behaviour during a difficult period can say far more than charm during a pleasant dinner.

Eden and Ansara shared a son, Matthew, and also worked together during their marriage. Ansara appeared in I Dream of Jeannie, while the couple also acted together in other projects. Their marriage eventually ended in divorce in 1974.
The length of a relationship clearly cannot be predicted by which partner is older. Eden’s marriage to an older man ended, while her marriage to a younger man has continued for more than 30 years. That does not prove age never matters, but it does suggest it is only one small part of a much larger picture.
Eden and Eicholtz appear to share compatible values, similar energy and a willingness to support each other. Their marriage has survived career changes, ageing, personal loss and the ordinary strains that come with decades together.
The age gap may be what catches people’s attention at first. After looking at the relationship more closely, though, the more interesting detail is not that Eden is eight years older. It is that the couple still seem happy to be standing beside each other after all this time.
