The Vincent Kompany update from Bayern Munich confirms that the head coach remains under medical care after collapsing while watching reserve-team training on Friday. His coaching staff will oversee training and matches until further notice, with the club placing his recovery ahead of a return to the touchline.

Bayern’s next assignment is away to Freiburg on Sunday, 25 October, at the Europa-Park Stadion. The football preparations now sit alongside an unexpected change in responsibility within the coaching group. The task is to keep the players ready while allowing Kompany the time and support identified in the club’s statement.

Our earlier Bayern–Arsenal team-news report noted Aaron Danks’s involvement in the preparations for Wednesday’s Champions League fixture. Friday’s announcement creates a clearer ongoing arrangement: the staff take responsibility for the team’s immediate work. It does not announce a permanent managerial change or set a date for Kompany to resume his duties.

Vincent Kompany update puts staff in charge

The statement from Bayern said Kompany was undergoing thorough examinations in hospital. Sporting board member Max Eberl promised the necessary care, support and recovery time, while expressing confidence in the coaching team. The announcement gave no diagnosis for the collapse and no specific return timetable.

Those limits are important when reading the news. Supporters have a confirmed account of the immediate incident and the club’s operational response. They do not have grounds to draw their own medical conclusions or attach a recovery deadline to the next important match. Any further medical detail needs to come from an authorised update rather than speculation around the fixture list.

Danks is an established member of the staff rather than an unfamiliar arrival. Bayern’s coaching biography records that he joined in July 2024, having previously worked with Kompany at Anderlecht. His experience also includes Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and England’s age-group setup, giving the club continuity through a coach already involved in its day-to-day work.

The wider group was given a long-term commitment in December 2025. Bayern extended the contracts of Danks, René Marić and Floribert Ngalula, together with goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner, until June 2029. Eberl described an established, functioning team at the time. Those existing working relationships are relevant now that the head coach’s duties have temporarily passed to his colleagues.

The immediate sporting background includes the European challenge discussed in our Bayern–Arsenal preview. Preparation, communication and decisions about player availability continue to matter regardless of who speaks at the press conference. The staff’s responsibility is to organise that work without turning the head coach’s recovery into a countdown towards a particular opponent.

Freiburg provide a demanding away assignment

The Bundesliga’s current table underlines why this is a substantial fixture. Bayern are first with 14 points, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, while Freiburg have 13. Both Bayern and Freiburg have four wins from their opening six league games. The visitors remain unbeaten in that league snapshot, while the hosts have one draw and one defeat.

Bayern’s statistical preview records four league wins over Freiburg under Kompany. It also notes that Freiburg’s 13 points represent a joint-best start to a Bundesliga campaign. The contrast is useful: the recent head-to-head record favours Munich, but the current season supplies a reason to take the home side seriously in its own right.

Set pieces are one area to watch. Bayern’s opposition profile reports that Freiburg scored their opening goal from a corner in each of their first three Bundesliga home matches this season. That pattern makes defensive organisation especially relevant, because a well-prepared dead-ball situation can create a chance without requiring long periods of open-play control.

Julian Schuster’s side have built that threat around an established group. Bayern’s profile highlights the experience of Matthias Ginter, Maximilian Eggestein and Vincenzo Grifo alongside players who developed through the club’s pathway. Freiburg’s strength therefore comes from familiar routines as well as individual contributions, a combination that can make an away match uncomfortable.

For Munich, the longer-term attacking picture is considered in our feature on Harry Kane’s Bayern future. Sunday’s priorities are more immediate: create enough useful chances, deal with the home side’s strengths and keep the team’s structure intact. The responsibilities are shared across the squad and the staff, rather than resting on a single headline name.

Olise’s return and Díaz’s absence shape the choices

Bayern’s Freiburg factfile points to Michael Olise returning after missing the Arsenal game through suspension. It also records five league assists for Kane, putting him joint-top of the competition’s provider list at that stage. Those figures show that the striker’s contribution includes creating goals for others, an important option when opponents concentrate on closing his shooting opportunities.

The available attacking combinations have also been affected by Luis Díaz’s injury. Bayern confirmed on Thursday that medical examinations identified a minor muscle-fibre tear in his left hamstring, sustained against Arsenal. The club said he would be sidelined for the foreseeable future. It did not provide a fixed return date in that announcement.

Freiburg’s home record adds another challenge. The opposition profile published before this weekend records five wins from five competitive home games this season. Their last home defeat came against Bayern in April, when the visitors won 3–2 with a late Lennart Karl goal. That history suggests a competitive venue, without establishing how the next meeting will unfold.

The confirmed coaching arrangement and the football decisions now run on separate terms. Bayern’s staff will prepare the team for Freiburg and the matches that follow; Kompany will receive the recovery time the club says he needs. For supporters, the next useful information is the selected team and any authorised club update, rather than an assumed medical explanation or promised comeback date.
