Cher and Chaz Bono’s Relationship Has Been Loving, Complicated, and Deeply Personal

The relationship between music legend Cher and her son Chaz Bono has never really been simple, but maybe that’s part of why so many people find their story so fascinating. Over the years, the two have gone through family struggles, fame, personal change, painful misunderstandings, and eventually, a much deeper understanding of each other.

For outsiders looking in, their relationship sometimes seemed rocky, especially during some very public moments in Chaz Bono’s life. But despite all the ups and downs, one thing has remained surprisingly consistent: they’ve continued finding their way back to each other.

And honestly, that probably says more than perfection ever could.

Chaz, born in 1969 to Cher and late entertainer Sonny Bono, grew up during a chaotic but iconic period in American pop culture. At the time, Sonny & Cher were huge stars, known for hit songs like “I Got You Babe” and their wildly popular television show, “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.”

But fame came with instability too.

By the time Chaz was still very young, his parents’ careers had already started going through major changes. Their marriage also began falling apart in front of the public. While adults around them understood the pressure and media attention, Chaz mostly experienced it as childhood memories backstage at TV studios.

Years later, Chaz recalled memories of hanging around the set and visiting nearby places for food while his parents worked. At that age, celebrity life didn’t seem unusual to him because it was simply normal life.

Growing Up In The Spotlight Wasn’t Always Easy

As a child, Chaz frequently appeared on his parents’ television programs. Back then, he was known publicly as Chastity Bono, a name inspired by a movie Cher had starred in years earlier.

Being raised in front of cameras sounds glamorous in theory, but growing up in public can create its own pressure. There’s very little room to figure yourself out privately when millions of people already think they know who you are.

During his teenage years, Chaz began struggling internally with questions about identity and sexuality. Eventually, he came out as gay, something that reportedly created tension with Cher at first.

Ironically, many people assumed Cher would immediately be accepting because she had long been viewed as a gay icon and someone closely connected to LGBTQ+ communities. But family situations are often more emotional and complicated than public images suggest.

According to Chaz, his father Sonny actually handled the news more calmly in the beginning. Cher, meanwhile, struggled emotionally with it for a while. Over time, though, their relationship improved again.

Still, the biggest turning point in their relationship was yet to come.

Cher Struggled With Chaz’s Transition At First

In his late 30s, Chaz Bono began transitioning from female to male, a decision that became one of the most public celebrity transitions of its time.

At first, Cher reportedly tried to be supportive, but as the physical changes became more noticeable, she found it emotionally difficult to adjust. Chaz later explained that when his voice started changing from testosterone treatments, it deeply affected his mother.

For a period, the two reportedly stopped speaking regularly. It was painful on both sides.

Cher herself later admitted that accepting the transition emotionally took time. She explained in interviews that understanding something intellectually is very different from actually watching your child change in such a major way.

One moment that hit her especially hard was hearing Chaz’s old voicemail disappear and realizing she would never hear his former voice again. That realization reportedly left her in tears.

And honestly, that part of their story feels very human. Not perfect, not clean, just real. A parent trying to process change while still loving their child.

Eventually, Cher fully embraced Chaz’s identity and became one of his loudest supporters.

Cher Became Fiercely Protective Of Her Son

As Chaz Bono became more visible as an actor and transgender activist, he also became a target for online criticism and transphobic attacks. But whenever that happened, Cher usually stepped in publicly to defend him.

Their relationship seemed to become stronger once both of them reached a place of honesty and acceptance.

Chaz later spoke about how supportive Cher became whenever internet trolls attacked him. In many interviews, he praised his mother for standing by him publicly even when conversations around transgender identity became heated online.

That support became especially visible during Chaz’s appearance on Dancing with the Stars in 2011. As the show’s first openly transgender contestant, he faced intense backlash from some viewers, including hateful comments and even threats.

Cher defended him fiercely during that period.

Over the years, Chaz has continued building a career in acting and activism, appearing in television shows like American Horror Story and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Cher, meanwhile, regularly expresses pride in his achievements online and during interviews.

Their relationship still isn’t portrayed as flawless, and maybe they’d both admit that themselves. Cher has even openly acknowledged that she sometimes accidentally slips up on pronouns despite her support for Chaz.

But what makes their story interesting is that they kept working through the discomfort instead of pretending it never existed.

More recently, rumors claimed Chaz wanted to distance himself from Cher before his wedding to longtime partner Shara Blue Mathes. Those reports turned out to be exaggerated. When the couple married in 2026, Cher was there proudly supporting her son.

At this point, their bond seems less about public image and more about something quieter and stronger — two people who have gone through years of change, misunderstanding, forgiveness, and love while trying to understand each other better along the way.
