Average domestic round-trip airfare for Labor Day is about $750 in AAA’s booking data, roughly 2% above last year. Tickets to the most popular U.S. destinations are much higher, averaging nearly $800 and about 20% more than a year ago.
International flights tell a different story. AAA says average international airfare is around $1,240, about 4% lower than last year. That does not make an overseas trip cheap, especially once hotels and local transport are included, but it shows why some travelers may see more value outside the U.S. than expected.

Drivers can avoid some of the worst traffic by changing the clock
INRIX data cited by AAA suggests Thursday, September 3 and Friday, September 4 will be the most difficult departure days. On Thursday, the worst driving window is expected between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; on Friday, it stretches from noon to 8 p.m.
Leaving earlier can make a meaningful difference. AAA recommends departing before 1 p.m. on Thursday, before noon on Friday and before 10 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday is expected to have relatively little holiday traffic impact, while Monday’s busiest return period is forecast between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The advice is especially useful for shorter road trips, where a two-hour departure shift may save a large part of the time that would otherwise be spent sitting in traffic.
Road travelers should also prepare the vehicle itself. AAA recommends checking tires, the battery and fluids before leaving and packing an emergency kit with water, snacks, first-aid supplies, a flashlight and jumper cables.
