Sadie Sink X-Men week turned one of the most familiar young faces from Stranger Things into one of Marvel’s biggest new casting stories. Disney used its 2026 D23 fan event to confirm that Sink will play Jean Grey in Marvel Studios’ next X-Men film, placing her at the center of a franchise reset scheduled for 2028.
The announcement immediately linked two very different parts of Sink’s career. For years, many viewers have known her as Max Mayfield, the sharp, emotionally guarded teenager who became a major part of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Jean Grey, by contrast, carries decades of comic-book history and the weight of previous film interpretations.
Reuters reported from D23 that Marvel’s new ensemble also includes Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister. Reuters’ D23 report confirmed the casting and the planned May 2028 release window.
For Sink, the timing is significant. She is moving out of one defining ensemble role just as another begins to take shape, and Marvel’s choice suggests the studio sees her as more than a recognizable name from a hit streaming series.
D23 gave Sink a new franchise identity
Jean Grey is not a minor supporting character. In the comics and earlier films, she is central to the emotional and moral conflicts that define the X-Men. Her powers, relationships and struggle with the Phoenix force have made her one of Marvel’s most recognizable mutants.
That makes the role a major step for Sink. She has already shown an ability to carry heavy emotional material, especially during Max’s darker Stranger Things storylines. Wowplus previously revisited the complicated Max and Lucas relationship, which helped give her character more depth than a typical teen-series subplot.
Marvel will still need to decide how much of Jean’s familiar history appears in the new film. The D23 reveal focused on casting rather than plot, so it would be premature to assume the studio is immediately adapting the Dark Phoenix storyline again.
What is clear is that Sink now has a role with long-term franchise potential. If Marvel’s new X-Men becomes a core part of the studio’s next phase, Jean Grey could appear across multiple films rather than in a one-off project.
Stranger Things prepared her for ensemble pressure
Sink joined Stranger Things after the series was already a global hit. That meant entering an established cast, earning space in a crowded story and gradually turning Max into a character audiences cared about independently.
She also had to perform within a show known for balancing large-scale genre spectacle with intimate character scenes. That background may prove useful in an X-Men movie, where superhero action only works when audiences understand the personal stakes underneath it.

Sink has already taken steps away from Max through films and stage work, but Jean Grey gives her a new mass-audience identity on a similar scale.
That does not mean the two roles are interchangeable. Max is grounded in a coming-of-age story shaped by grief, friendship and supernatural danger. Jean is a superhero whose powers and responsibilities can become cosmic in scale.
The contrast could work in Sink’s favor. It gives her an opportunity to use the emotional intensity audiences already associate with her while showing a different physical and dramatic presence.
Her wider career has also included appearances outside the Netflix franchise. Wowplus noted Sink’s place in Taylor Swift’s star-filled music-video world, where she appeared in the short film for “All Too Well.” That project helped introduce her to audiences who may not have followed every season of Stranger Things.
Marvel now has to make the new X-Men feel new
The bigger challenge belongs to Marvel. Jean Grey, Cyclops, Professor X and other core characters have already appeared in multiple film eras. A new cast only works if the studio gives audiences a reason to see these versions as distinct rather than replacements.
Sink’s age gives Marvel room to build Jean over time. The character does not need to arrive with every familiar conflict already fully formed. A slower introduction could allow the new team dynamic to become the focus before the franchise reaches its largest comic-book storylines.
D23 also showed that Disney is planning far ahead, with several projects stretching into 2028 and beyond. That long runway gives the X-Men reboot space to be positioned as an event rather than a rushed extension of the existing Marvel slate.
The Sadie Sink X-Men week therefore matters because it marks more than one casting announcement. It is the moment Sink moved from being remembered primarily as Max Mayfield to being publicly attached to another character with the potential to define the next stage of her career. The film is still years away, but the D23 reveal has already changed the conversation around what comes after Stranger Things.
