Nigeria Customs Service Collects N28.8 Billion Revenue in Eight Months, Intensifies Efforts to Curb Smuggling

In a remarkable achievement, the Kano-Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has collected a staggering N28.8 billion in revenue from January to August. This significant milestone was announced by the outgoing Area Comptroller, Sambo Dangaladima, during the handover ceremony to the new Area Comptroller, Dauda Ibrahim Chana, in Kano on Wednesday.

Dangaladima attributed the success to the adoption of aggressive and strict compliance measures by the area command, resulting in the collection of approximately N5.1 billion in August alone. The command’s commitment to ensuring that goods entering its jurisdiction pay the appropriate duties has played a pivotal role in achieving this impressive revenue collection.

Furthermore, the Kano-Jigawa Area Command has been relentless in its efforts to combat smuggling activities. Over the past eight months, prohibited items worth N284 million have been seized. Dangaladima emphasized the command’s commitment to dealing decisively with individuals involved in sharp practices and illegal businesses. To reinforce these efforts, officers have been strategically positioned at key locations to effectively prevent any form of smuggling.

Recognizing the importance of border security, Dangaladima urged officers and personnel to extend their support and cooperation to the new Area Comptroller, Dauda Ibrahim Chana. In his inaugural address, Chana expressed his dedication to upholding the core values and principles of the service while enhancing efficiency and transparency in customs operations.

Chana outlined the command’s plans to bolster security at border posts, aiming to curtail illegal trades and prevent the influx of contraband into the country. To achieve this, the command will conduct 100 percent physical examinations to prevent offensive goods from being smuggled through its areas of supervision.

“I am honored and humbled to assume leadership of the command, one of the most dynamic within the Nigeria Customs Service,” Chana stated. “I pledge to work tirelessly alongside our dedicated customs officers to ensure the efficient and transparent management of customs operations in Kano Area Command. We will enhance trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security in line with the directives of the management of the Nigeria Customs Service.”
