In a poignant moment for the world of journalism and the arts, Dan Rather, the esteemed former CBS anchor, is mourning the loss of his wife, Jean Rather, who passed away at the age of 89 on November 26, 2024. The heartbreaking news was shared by friends on social media, revealing that Jean died peacefully at their home in Austin, Texas, surrounded by family and her cherished artwork. “She had been on hospice care for some time, but the news still comes as a shock for those of us who knew and loved her,” the message stated. “Please keep the Rathers in your thoughts. Jean lived a full life as an incredible wife, mother, friend, and artist — and a true Texan.”

Jean Rather was not just the wife of a famous journalist; she was a talented artist in her own right. With formal training from American University and Marymount Manhattan College, Jean’s artwork was featured in numerous galleries across the United States. Her obituary highlights her dedication to her craft, noting that she developed a distinct contemporary style influenced by her studies of master artists in museums around the world, including those in England, France, Italy, Russia, Israel, Greece, Turkey, and Southeast Asia. Furthermore, Jean was deeply involved in the art community, serving as a Painter Member and Vice Chair of the New York City Art Commission for nearly a decade.

While Jean often preferred to remain out of the limelight, those who knew her understood the significant role she played in Dan’s life and career. As a constant presence at his side during public appearances, she was not just a supportive spouse but also his most ardent supporter behind the scenes. Dan Rather has often credited Jean as the backbone of his successful journalism career, especially during the demanding early years at CBS News.

Reflecting on their life together, Dan once shared, “The first year I was with CBS News, I was home 41 days out of the year. Very hard to hold a marriage and a family together then.” It is clear that Jean’s unwavering support was crucial during those challenging times. He carried a picture of her wherever he went, a testament to the deep bond they shared.

Dan further emphasized Jean’s role in their family dynamics, calling her the glue that held everything together. “Jeannie Grace Goebel [who] was absolutely committed: ‘Whatever it takes, we’re going to make it work,'” he recalled. He also mentioned how he made a conscious effort to dedicate quality time to their children, Robin and Dan, whenever he was home. “I tried to hit the off switch,” he said, adding that Jean played an essential role in ensuring their family remained close despite the demands of his career.

Together, Dan and Jean raised their two children, Danjack and Robin, and welcomed two grandchildren, Martin and Andy, into their family. Jean’s legacy will continue through them, as well as through her artwork and the many lives she touched during her lifetime.

In a touching tribute to Jean, the family has requested that donations be made to the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in Austin, Texas, in lieu of flowers. This gesture reflects Jean’s commitment to education and empowerment, values she instilled in her family and community.
