In People’s interview with Barker, he explained that he and Kardashian try to stay accountable to each other and avoid carrying small disagreements into the next day.

Celebrity relationships are often described in extremes. A couple is either “stronger than ever” or supposedly in crisis, with little room for the ordinary disagreements that exist in most long-term partnerships.

Barker’s description is more practical. He did not claim that he and Kardashian never argue. Instead, he focused on what happens after conflict begins. That matters because couples can disagree without allowing every disagreement to become a larger story about the relationship itself.

Their blended family adds another layer to communication

Barker and Kardashian do not operate as a two-person household. Together they are part of a large blended family with children from previous relationships as well as their son Rocky Thirteen, born in 2023.

Barker has son Landon and daughter Alabama with ex-wife Shanna Moakler and remains close to stepdaughter Atiana De La Hoya. Kardashian shares Mason, Penelope and Reign with former partner Scott Disick.

Kardashian is part of that story because she was with Barker when he took his first flight since the crash in 2021. For Barker, getting back on a plane was not simply a travel decision. It required confronting trauma attached to an event that killed four people and left him with severe burns.

That history gives his comments about marriage a different tone. “Never go to bed angry” can sound like a slogan when removed from context, but Barker’s adult life has repeatedly forced him to deal with fear, grief and the limits of control.

The documentary also includes discussion of the miscarriage Barker and Kardashian experienced before the birth of Rocky. Barker has said they chose to speak about it because other people might relate to the experience and feel less alone.

That willingness to discuss painful family experiences contrasts with Barker’s more detached approach to reality television. He recently said he does not regularly watch The Kardashians or treat filming as a central part of his identity.

The relationship works partly because Barker does not live inside Kardashian media

Barker’s position in the Kardashian universe is unusual. He is visible on the family’s show but does not appear to organize his career around it. His primary identity remains as a drummer, producer and touring musician.

That separation may give the couple a useful boundary. Kardashian has spent much of her adult life on reality television, while Barker already had fame, a music career and his own earlier reality-TV experience before they became a couple.
