PDP Caucus Leader, Solomon Akpulonu, Suspended for 14 Sitting Days by Abia State House of Assembly

In a dramatic turn of events, Solomon Akpulonu, the member representing Obingwa East state constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly and leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) caucus, has been suspended for a period of 14 sitting days. This announcement was made on Tuesday by the Speaker of the House, Emmanuel Emeruwa, who highlighted Akpulonu’s acts of insubordination and incitement against the leadership of the 8th Assembly.

Speaking on the floor of the Assembly, Speaker Emeruwa emphasized the Assembly’s intolerance towards acts of insubordination and stressed that it is unacceptable for a lawmaker to grant media interviews and disclose the Assembly’s activities without proper clearance from the leadership. He asserted that matters discussed within the Assembly should remain solely within its confines.

Akpulonu’s suspension stems from his repeated involvement in causing chaos within the Assembly ever since its inauguration. Speaker Emeruwa stated that he had exercised tremendous patience in dealing with Akpulonu’s actions but could no longer tolerate his behavior. He further emphasized that while disagreements are expected amongst lawmakers, they should be conducted with decorum and within the boundaries of the law.

Although Akpulonu was not present in the Assembly during the announcement, Speaker Emeruwa made it clear that the message would be promptly conveyed to him.

The suspension order triggered a protest by 11 members of the PDP in the Assembly. These members, acknowledging the concessions made by the PDP in granting the speakership and deputy speakership positions to the Labour Party, demanded that the majority seat and other key positions be allocated to the PDP. The Labour Party, which currently has 10 members, holds these positions.

This recent development followed a warning issued by Speaker Emeruwa two weeks prior, cautioning against any form of distraction by certain members of the Assembly.

The suspension of Solomon Akpulonu has undoubtedly added fuel to the already intense political climate in Abia State. As the leader of the PDP caucus, Akpulonu’s actions and subsequent suspension have significant implications for party dynamics and the power balance within the Assembly.

Akpulonu is now faced with the consequences of his alleged insubordination, and it remains to be seen how this suspension will impact his political career and influence within the PDP. On the other hand, the PDP’s demand for a greater share of key positions within the Assembly adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious situation.

The unfolding drama in the Abia State House of Assembly serves as a reminder of the importance of discipline and unity among lawmakers. While disagreements are natural, it is crucial that elected officials find ways to address their concerns without resorting to acts that disrupt the functioning of the Assembly and its ability to serve the people effectively.

In the coming days, the political landscape in Abia State will undoubtedly be closely observed as stakeholders and citizens alike anticipate the resolution of this suspension and its potential ramifications.
