Model Kim Porter’s cause of death has been confirmed.
On Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office revealed that Porter, who famously shared an on-and-off relationship with rapper-producer Sean “Diddy” Combs, died of lobar pneumonia, TMZ reports.
In a statement released to NBC News, the county’s medical examiner noted that Porter had passed away in her sleep due to this infection in her lungs, adding, “The manner of death was certified as natural.” According to the Mayo Clinic, this form of pneumonia affects “one part (lobe) of the lung,” and “can occur on its own or after you’ve had a cold or the flu.”
As Nicki Swift previously reported, Porter passed away in her home in Toluca Lake, Calif. on the morning of Nov. 15, 2018. She was just 47 years old. “Sadly, I can confirm the passing of Kim Porter,” Combs’ rep, Cindi Berger, stated at the time. “I ask that you give the families privacy at this time.” Around the time of her passing, it was revealed that Porter had been seeking medical treatment for flu-like symptoms for over a week.
According to an emergency dispatch call obtained by TMZ, Porter was initially thought to have been experiencing cardiac arrest. While authorities determined that no foul play was suspected, some mystery initially surrounded her cause of death, which the coroner’s office previously told Radar Online had been “deferred pending additional tests.” Additionally, the toxicology test results had not yet been publicly released.
However, it was recently revealed in the coroner’s latest statement that there were no narcotic drugs or alcohol found in Porter’s system. Furthermore, the statement continued, “There was no known history of drug abuse or alcoholism and no signs of trauma.”
The report went on to document the last 24 hours of Porters’ life, noting that she had gone to bed at around 11:30 p.m. local time the night before her passing after getting a deep-tissue massage from her goddaughter and watching movies with her family. The following morning, Porter’s goddaughter checked in on her at 8:30 a.m. and assumed she was asleep. Three hours later, the model’s housemates found her unresponsive and called 911. According to Porter’s death certificate, which was previously obtained by The Blast, her time of death was listed as 11:40 a.m.
According to E! News, Porter and Combs, 49, dated on-and-off for 13 years before calling it quits in 2007. The amicable exes shared three children together: 20-year-old son Christian and 11-year-old twin daughters Jessie James and D’Lila. Combs also helped raise Porter’s 27-year-old son Quincy from her previous relationship with music producer Al B. Sure (real name Albert Joseph Brown III).
For his part, Combs took to Instagram days following his ex’s passing, writing in part, “For the last three days I’ve been trying to wake up out of this nightmare. But I haven’t. I don’t know what I’m going to do without you baby. I miss you so much.” He added, “Today I’m going to pay tribute to you, I’m going to try and find the words to explain our unexplainable relationship. We were more than best friends, we were more than soulmates. WE WERE SOME OTHER S**T!! And I miss you so much. Super Black Love.”
As previously reported by the Ledger-Enquirer, Porter was later laid to rest on Nov. 24 at Evergreen Memorial Park following a funeral held at the megachurch Cascade Hills Church in her hometown of Columbus, Ga. Over a thousand people attended the public service, including a number of celebrities, such as Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Rashida Jones, Queen Latifah, Faith Evans, Lil’ Kim, Mase, and Chris Rock. As captured in a video on Love & Hip Hop rapper Rasheeda Frost’s Instagram page, a fireworks display reportedly marked the end of the service.
While delivering a moving eulogy, Combs said in part, “I just want to say to my kids, Justin, Christian, D’Lila, Jessie, Chance and the other man in the house, Quincy: Your mother instilled in me this, and I pledge in front of everybody right now that I will always be there for you” (via People). He added, “I will always take care of you.”
Our thoughts remain with Combs and Porter’s loved ones during this time.
