Lily of the Valley

April showers bring May flowers, and we’re so thankful for that! May’s darling for our “A Year of Flowers” mini-series with Poppy + Mint Floral Company is the Lily of the Valley. Each delicate flower forms a tiny white or pale pink bell-shape with a slight outward ribbon curl at the end of each petal. There is a burst of delicate hanging blooms on a singular stem with two lustrous upright leaves — in just the perfect shade of spring green.

Symbolic of good luck, Lily of the Valley is often the flower of choice for May Day, a holiday traditionally held in the Northern hemisphere to welcome the warmer season and wish others good luck in life and love; maypole dances, flowy dresses, and Lily bouquets are a must! The team at Poppy + Mint Floral Company designed this sweet shoot around the joyous + definitely springtime flower… Legend has it that the Lily of the Valley became spellbound by a nightingale that was singing in a nearby tree. The Lily was so enchanted by its songs that when it flew off, the Lily became heartsick and would not bloom again until spring, when the nightingale returned and restored happiness to the forest.

Erika Parker Photography captured the lovely springtime looks that have us majorly crushing on the Lily of the Valley! Let’s take a look!

So delicate + dainty! Typically blooming in May, Lily of the Valley are also called “May Lilies” or “May Bells”.

Lily of the Valley

The delicate, alluring aroma is the cornerstone of Lily of the Valley, with all the charm expected of a spring bloom. The scent includes whispers of sweetness, good memories, and a splash of morning dew. It makes a really lovely addition to a perfume blend or is simply stunning as a single note.

This sensitive, joyful flower has all the sensibilities of a true floral beauty. When they are finished blooming for the season it shows off deep red berries — a nice contrast in the cooler months. All year round, Lily of the Valley is a show stopper, but May is well kept in good fortune, luck in love, bird-song, and pure happiness!
