UNICEF demands Child Rights Act’s implementation

FRIDAY OLOKOR

The United Nations Children’s Fund has called on the Federal Government to speed up action in adopting the Child Rights Act in all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The UN agency also advised the states to heed the call by President Muhammadu Buhari to end violence against children.

A statement issued on Saturday by UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, in commemoration of this year’s Children’s Day, said millions of Nigerian children suffer some form of physical, emotional or sexual violence.

The statement reads, “We call on the state assemblies of the remaining 12 states to urgently pass Child Rights bills and on governors to sign those bills into law.

“We also call on governors of the 29 states who have not yet launched state-level campaigns to end violence against children to do so.”
