Nigeria Football Federation Files Protest with CAF Over Alleged Age Cheating by Guinea in U-23 AFCON Qualifiers

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has filed an official protest with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over an alleged case of age cheating by Guinea in their 2023 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against the Olympic Eagles last month. The protest comes after Guinea beat Nigeria to the U-23 AFCON ticket following a 2-0 aggregate win in the two-legged tie.

The player in question is Fode Camara, who featured against the Olympic Eagles and is believed to be over the approved age limit for the U-23 category. The NFF has reportedly gathered concrete evidence to back up its claims and is now hoping that CAF will rule in its favor.

If the NFF can prove its case before CAF, Guinea will be disqualified from the competition, and the Olympic Eagles will be handed their spot. The 2023 U-23 AFCON is set to be hosted by Morocco in November and will also serve as the qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Age cheating has been a persistent problem in African football, with several countries being caught in the act over the years. In 2016, CAF introduced MRI scans to determine the ages of players, but this has not entirely eliminated the problem.

The NFF’s decision to file a protest against Guinea is a bold move aimed at curbing the prevalence of age cheating in African football. It also highlights the importance of fair play and integrity in the sport, especially at the youth level, where age restrictions are put in place to give young players the opportunity to develop their skills and gain international exposure.

The NFF’s action has received widespread support from fans and stakeholders in Nigerian football, with many expressing their belief that justice will be served. Some have also called for stiffer penalties for countries caught engaging in age cheating, such as a ban from future competitions or fines.

Meanwhile, the Guinea Football Federation has not yet responded to the allegations of age cheating. It remains to be seen how CAF will handle the case, but the outcome will undoubtedly have significant implications for both Nigeria and Guinea and the wider African football community.

The 2023 edition is set to feature some of the best young talents from across Africa, with teams such as Egypt, South Africa, Ghana, and Ivory Coast expected to compete for the title. The competition will also provide an opportunity for players to impress scouts from European clubs, who are always on the lookout for talented youngsters to add to their squads.
