Julia Roberts and Danny Moder have a relationship story that runs through film sets, family milestones and two different jobs in the same industry. As Roberts turns 59 on October 28, their established public record offers more substance than the familiar photograph of an actor standing beside her husband.

Roberts performs in front of the camera; Moder has built his career behind it. Their paths have sometimes crossed professionally, most clearly in the credits of HBO’s The Normal Heart. Following those collaborations alongside their own public comments gives a fuller picture of the couple without pretending to know their private conversations.

A meeting on a film set and a July wedding

The pair met during the production of The Mexican, released in 2001. Roberts starred in the film, while Moder worked on its camera crew. They married on July 4, 2002, in New Mexico. The location and date have become familiar parts of their story, repeatedly revisited when an anniversary photograph appears.

By July 2026, they had reached their 24th wedding anniversary. Reporting on Roberts’s own Instagram post described a selfie marking that milestone. It was a small public update rather than a new account of the ceremony. That distinction suits a marriage whose public timeline is made up of selected moments shared over many years.

Our report on their 2021 anniversary selfie captures an earlier point in that timeline. It belongs to the nineteenth anniversary, rather than this year’s milestone. Keeping those dates attached helps readers enjoy an affectionate photograph without mistaking an old post recirculating online for a fresh announcement.

Two names in the credits of The Normal Heart

The 2014 television film provides a clear example of their careers meeting. The Television Academy lists Moder as its director of photography and Roberts as Dr. Emma Brookner. He received a cinematography nomination; she received a supporting-actress nomination. The film itself won Outstanding Television Movie, as well as an award for its makeup.

Those distinctions recognise different contributions. A performer builds a character through delivery, movement and interaction with other actors. A director of photography helps determine how that performance and the surrounding world reach the screen. Sharing a production does not make those responsibilities interchangeable, even when the two people doing them are married.

In a July 2014 interview with SHOOT, Moder discussed choosing film to evoke the drama’s 1980s setting. He credited director Ryan Murphy with the initial push towards that format. His account concentrated on a working cinematographer’s concerns: light, camera monitoring and maintaining continuity when production paused for several months.

He also described meeting Murphy while visiting Roberts during Eat Pray Love. In Moder’s account, the director had seen his earlier work and later sent him the Normal Heart script. The connection began in a social setting around one production and developed into a separate professional conversation about another.

For another example of marriage alongside distinct creative careers, our feature on Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson follows acting, music and producing across decades. Such profiles become more interesting when each partner retains a professional identity, rather than one person’s work disappearing behind the other’s more familiar name.

Their comments place family life in a different frame

Roberts and Moder have three children. Their occasional family posts have attracted attention partly because they offer a glimpse outside the polished setting of a premiere. A Mother’s Day photograph shared by Moder in 2019, for instance, showed the family together. It was a chosen public moment, rather than an invitation to follow their daily routines.

In her 2018 interview with Oprah Winfrey for Harper’s Bazaar, Roberts spoke about the discomfort of encountering invented marriage stories in tabloids. She described feeling proud of the relationship and unhappy when sensational accounts reached the family. Her comments give context to the distance between public curiosity and the experience of people reading about themselves.

The interview also included a memory of Moder arranging a family surprise around her fiftieth birthday. That recollection belonged to a particular celebration, told afterwards by Roberts herself. It is an affectionate anecdote about their shared life, rather than a formula that explains every year of a long marriage.

A September 2022 conversation with Gayle King provided another public glimpse. Oprah Daily’s account described Roberts talking warmly about Moder around their twentieth anniversary. Read alongside the earlier interview, it shows how she has sometimes chosen to discuss the relationship in conversation, even while leaving much of family life outside those appearances.

A family connection beyond their own anniversary

Roberts’s wider family also appears in entertainment coverage, including our look at Emma Roberts’s wedding style. A wedding, birthday or film premiere can bring relatives into the same public story. Each event still has its own date and context; it should not become a substitute for an update from the couple themselves.

The more lasting connection in Roberts and Moder’s story is the combination of a shared household and individual creative work. A film credit can identify exactly what each contributed. An anniversary post records what they chose to celebrate. Neither needs an imagined argument, secret promise or invented quotation to make it interesting.

At this stage of the timeline, the 2002 wedding and their documented collaborations remain useful landmarks. They connect the movie set where their paths crossed with the public milestones that followed. For viewers returning to The Normal Heart, the credits also offer a chance to notice both the acting and the photography.
