Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City record has reached seven Premier League wins from his first seven matches in charge of the club. Saturday’s 3–2 victory over Ipswich Town secured the milestone at the Etihad Stadium. City’s official account identifies it as the longest winning start by a manager taking charge of a Premier League club, moving him beyond the previous six-match mark.

The distinction needs a precise description. This is a record for the start of a managerial reign, rather than the longest winning run by any team at the beginning of a league season. City’s account lists Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the managers whose six opening victories Maresca has now surpassed. Seven wins also mean 21 points collected from 21 available.

The run has been built around a demanding schedule for the players as well as a change of coach. Wowplus previously covered the October discussion about Erling Haaland’s workload. That earlier report provides background to the calendar. It should not replace the latest club update when assessing a player’s condition before the next fixture.

What the Ipswich win revealed

Phil Foden opened the scoring against Ipswich before Daizen Maeda brought the visitors level. Haaland then scored twice, while Zian Flemming’s late penalty reduced the margin to one goal. The result therefore required City to regain a lead and protect it through an uncomfortable finish. It was another win, but the scoreline leaves room to examine how it was achieved.

City’s match report describes Foden meeting Jérémy Doku’s cutback for the opener. Haaland’s goals came after work involving Mateo Kovačić and Iliman Ndiaye. Those contributions matter because the final touch tells only part of an attacking sequence. Movement before a pass and the quality of the delivery can determine whether a striker receives a difficult chance or a clear opportunity.

A perfect points return can make every performance appear equally convincing when the individual games have asked different questions. Against Ipswich, conceding an equaliser did not prevent City from finding another route forward. The late penalty also meant the contest remained live. Both parts belong in the assessment alongside the record, rather than being edited out of a celebratory account.

Haaland remains central to the story, although his career extends well beyond this particular sequence of games. Our profile of his development and rise as a scorer gives broader background. The relevant update now is his contribution to Saturday’s win and the fresh information the club provides before another short turnaround.

Maresca credits improvement and updates fitness

In his post-match news conference, Maresca emphasised the daily improvement he sees from the squad as well as the results. The club’s published account also records him giving credit to the players. That reaction places the milestone within continuing work on performances. Winning the first seven league games is an achievement already secured; maintaining that standard remains a separate task.

The same press conference included fitness updates. Maresca said Kovačić, Matheus Nunes and Haaland had told him they were okay. He referred to Nico O’Reilly’s back problem and said City needed to wait on Antoine Semenyo. Those were post-Ipswich comments, not a confirmed team sheet for Tuesday. Later official information may change the availability picture before the European match.

Haaland also passed another marker in the preceding Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain. City’s dedicated record article says his first goal took him beyond Sergio Agüero’s 36 in the tournament proper, with a second goal extending his total again. The distinction excludes Agüero’s qualifying hat-trick against Steaua Bucharest. Comparisons should use the same competition definition for both players.

European preparation brings a different set of opponents and match situations. Wowplus’s September 2025 preview of City against Napoli belongs to an earlier campaign. It illustrates why old tactical coverage needs its date attached: personnel and decisions can change, while the underlying question of balancing attacking ambition and defensive protection keeps returning.

A European response is the next question

City lost the PSG match 4–2 despite Haaland scoring twice. That result, recorded in the club’s match report, is a useful counterweight to the domestic winning streak. A striker’s individual milestone and a team defeat can happen on the same evening. The league record should therefore be described as a league record, without turning it into a claim of an unbeaten season across every competition.

The next Champions League opponent is AEK Athens at the Etihad on Tuesday, October 20. City list the senior kick-off at 20:00 UK time, also 20:00 in Lagos on that date. Supporters should check that they are viewing the senior fixture rather than an academy listing. An advance preview does not establish the starting lineup or guarantee that a recent scorer will begin.

City’s City record account supplies the historical comparison behind Maresca’s achievement. The practical question now is how his side carries its domestic momentum into another competition. Can it continue creating good chances while reducing the moments that allow an opponent back into a match? Tuesday will provide fresh evidence rather than an automatic extension of Saturday’s result.

Seven opening league wins have given Maresca a clear achievement to point to early in his tenure. The most useful reading of it keeps the details together: the exact record, the contribution of the players, the close finish against Ipswich and the separate European setback. City have earned the points already on their league account. Their next result still has to be earned on the pitch.
