Following a recommendation, Hoying brought Avi Kaplan into the fold, a talented bass singer. Eager to complete the ensemble with a beatboxer, Hoying and the others stumbled upon a remarkable video of Kevin Olusola showcasing his beatboxing prowess while playing the cello simultaneously. Enthralled by his musical prowess, they knew they had found the missing piece.
After a persuasive pitch, Olusola joined the group, and with the collective effort of the five members, they managed to secure his presence in Los Angeles for the audition. Thus, Pentatonix was born, a name inspired by the five-note pentatonic scale in music.
With little time to spare, the newly formed group dove into rehearsals, preparing to perform their audition song, “Telephone.” The chemistry between the members was palpable, as Maldonado recounted the momentous occasion, sharing, “The day before the audition we all got down and were able to sing through the song, and it honestly was just amazing how well it flowed together. We had no idea, it could have been horrible.”
