Understand The Working Principle of an Energy Meter

An energy meter is a device used to measure the amount of electrical energy consumed by a household, business, or any other entity. It is also known as a watt-hour meter and can be found in every household today. An energy meter comes with a rotating disc which rotates at several revolutions proportional to the amount of electrical energy used. The number of revolutions at each time is measured and processed by an electronic circuit to determine the electricity used. The device’s main purpose is to help people save power and start using alternative sources of energy cheaper than electricity.

Crucial Terms to Know

To understand how an energy meter works, you need to be familiar with the following terms:

  • Circuit – A closed path for conducting electric current from one point to another. Most circuits contain two or more conductors, called a source (or battery) and a load, connected by connecting wires or cables. The conductors may be insulated materials such as cable or wire.
  • Electronic circuit – A circuit containing active electronic components; especially when compared with other types of electrical circuits that use passive components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors etc., which are all considered electronic components themselves; but these passive devices cannot create any electrical signals on their own without being part of some kind active electronic device like an amplifier (speaker), oscillator etc.

Working Principle of Energy Meters

The working principle of an energy meter is as follows:

An electric meter or energy meter works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The principle here is that when a current-carrying conductor moves in a magnetic field, an electromotive force (EMF) is induced in it. This is called electromagnetic induction.

The working of an electric meter depends on this principle and can be explained by using wire coils as an example: When alternating current flows through one coil and then another, it induces a voltage in the second coil, which drives a moving coil to keep track of how much electricity has been consumed or produced by means of turning dials or hand wheels attached to them.

When an energy meter is installed, the moving coil is made to encounter a magnetic field. This magnetic field induces a voltage in the moving coil, which results in the deflection of the moving coil. The direction and magnitude of deflection depending on the direction or polarity of the current flowing through it. An electric meter or energy meter works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The principle here is that when a current-carrying conductor moves in a magnetic field, an electromotive force (EMF) is induced in it.

A simple motor attached to a numerical indicator counts these deflections and displays them on an LCD. The disc, which rotates with each pulse, has a series of numbers printed on it that correspond to the number of revolutions made by the motor. This is how the meter can tell you how many kilowatts (or any other unit) you have used since resetting it before reading your electricity usage for the current billing period.

Get In Touch with a Dependable Supplier

The working principle of an energy meter is quite simple, but the technology behind it has advanced drastically over the years. The latest models of energy meters are highly sophisticated and accurate devices that not only measure the amount of electricity a household uses but also help save power. In addition, they provide information about peak consumption times and suggestions on how to save electricity through their built-in software systems. When investing in an energy meter, we recommend sifting through the various suppliers and finding the one that best suits your budget.
