BREAKING: Former Ghana President, Jerry Rawlings is dead

Former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, is dead.

He passed away on Thursday at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Born on June 22, 1947, the former military leader ruled from 1981 to 2001.

Rawlings led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the elected President.

He resigned from the military in 1992 and founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He was the first President of the Fourth Republic and was re-elected in 1996 for another four years.

After his tenure, Rawlings endorsed his vice-president John Atta Mills as presidential candidate in 2000.
