Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal was a comeback built on two Alexis Mac Allister goals and a pair of Rio Ngumoha assists at Anfield on Tuesday, October 20. The hosts recovered from 2-0 down, reached half-time level and then moved ahead before the visitors made the closing minutes uncomfortable with a third goal.

Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona gave Villarreal their early advantage. Mac Allister and Ronald Araujo replied with headers before the interval, and Mac Allister scored again in the second half before Florian Wirtz made it 4-2. Tani Oluwaseyi’s late finish reduced the gap, but Liverpool retained all three points.

Our Liverpool–Villarreal preview examined the Anfield assignment before kick-off. What followed was less straightforward than the home side’s winning European start might have suggested. Liverpool had to repair a two-goal deficit before they could build the advantage that ultimately decided the match.

Two headers change the match before half-time

Mikautadze capitalised on a misplaced Virgil van Dijk header to open the scoring. Cardona then finished a counter-attack that extended the lead before the half-hour. Villarreal’s own match report emphasises the quality of that opening period, when the visitors were able to progress through Liverpool’s pressure and find dangerous attacking situations.

Liverpool’s first route back was a corner. Mac Allister met Kostas Tsimikas’ delivery to halve the deficit, before Araujo headed in Ngumoha’s cross at the end of the half. The timing changed the position at the break: a game that had reached 0-2 would restart at 2-2, without Liverpool needing another goal simply to restore parity.

Andoni Iraola altered the side at half-time, replacing Araujo with Wirtz and moving Ryan Gravenberch to right-back. In his press conference, the manager explained that Villarreal’s central overloads had created problems without the ball. He believed Gravenberch could follow play inside while also helping Ngumoha’s attacking work on the right.

Tuesday’s other high-scoring fixtures had their own turning points. Our PSG–Barcelona report follows a contest settled by late Paris goals after two equalisers. At Anfield, Liverpool first had to erase a larger deficit, making the recovery before half-time a particularly important part of the story.

Ngumoha’s assists help turn recovery into a lead

Ngumoha then helped turn the comeback into a lead. His dribble and cross supplied Mac Allister’s second goal, a close-range finish that went in off the crossbar. Wirtz scored from Cody Gakpo’s pass shortly afterwards. Liverpool’s official report places those goals within a three-minute spell, moving the scoreboard from level to 4-2.

The assists also produced a club milestone. According to Liverpool, citing Opta’s Michael Reid, Ngumoha became the youngest player to provide an assist for the club in European competition at 18 years and 52 days. The previous mark belonged to Michael Owen, who assisted against Valencia in November 1998 at 18 years and 324 days.

Iraola’s assessment retained a developmental perspective alongside the praise. He highlighted Ngumoha’s ability to create in one-against-one situations and his willingness to keep improving different aspects of his game. The manager also cautioned that a young player’s progress will include uneven spells. That is more measured than treating one productive evening as a finished career statement.

The result also preserved a different early European record from the one described in our Manchester City–AEK report. City’s win took them to six points; Liverpool’s third successive league-phase victory brought nine. Those are current campaign totals, rather than final standings or guarantees about the next stages of the competition.

Villarreal keep the closing stages alive

Mac Allister’s two finishes showed different ways of arriving in the area. The first was a header from a corner; the second followed Ngumoha’s work from open play. In a post-match interview reported by the club, the midfielder described enjoying runs into the box and attacking the near post despite not being particularly tall.

Villarreal retained a threat after Liverpool’s four-goal sequence. Their report records Ayoze Pérez hitting the post before crossing for Oluwaseyi’s late goal. The substitute’s finish brought the score to 4-3 and restored the possibility of an equaliser. It did not change the eventual points return, but it explains why Liverpool’s two-goal cushion was not the final margin.

Iraola acknowledged that Villarreal had been stronger during the opening stretch and praised the quality of the opponent when assessing the value of the win. His explanation makes space for both parts of the match: Liverpool’s recovery and the difficulties that required it. The result does not erase the early problems simply because the home side overcame them.

Villarreal’s campaign context is different. Their official account places the Anfield defeat after a 3-1 home win over Napoli and an earlier 3-2 loss at Dortmund. Tuesday therefore supplied another competitive away performance without another point. The first half and late response gave them moments to examine, while the decisive middle spell belonged to Liverpool.

Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal ultimately combined recovery with a narrow finish. Mac Allister supplied two goals, Ngumoha helped create two and Wirtz added the strike that proved essential once the visitors scored again. Liverpool kept their perfect league-phase record, with the match offering both a significant attacking contribution from an 18-year-old and clear reminders of how hard the points had been earned.
