Ilorin Authorities Take Action Against Open Defecation: Three Buildings Sealed

In a decisive move to combat public health hazards posed by open defecation, officials in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, have sealed three buildings found to be engaging in this unsanitary practice. The enforcement operation was carried out by a team from the Environmental Health Officers within the Ministry of Environment in the Ilorin East Local Government Area. According to the team’s leader, the measures were taken after a thorough investigation and interactions with individuals involved. In addition to the sealing of the three buildings in the Adualere area, local residents along the Obbo-Ayegunle road were instructed to clean their drainage systems, which had become clogged with refuse. Moreover, an illegal poultry farm located in the Irewolede area of Ilorin faced repercussions for failing to comply with environmental regulations. The business was fined N50,000 and ordered to acquire a waste bin to manage its refuse properly. Officials reported that the farm promptly complied, purchasing the necessary equipment after facing penalties.

During a briefing on these enforcement actions, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, the Commissioner for Environment, stressed the importance of responsible waste management. She warned residents about the dangers of indiscriminate waste dumping, which can lead to the spread of communicable diseases. The state government has made provisions for effective waste collection to ensure that citizens can dispose of their refuse safely, without compromising their own health or that of their neighbors.

Hajia Buge highlighted that Kwara State has set a precedent in its fight against littering and unsanitary practices, earning accolades for its commitment to a “Cleaner Kwara.” She outlined the government’s vision for creating a hygienic atmosphere that supports both social and economic activities through health-conscious practices.
