Game #109: Graveman roughed up, A’s lose 11-2.

This one was basically rocky from the get-go.

Marcus Semien continued his hot streak with a double in the top of the first, but no one brought him home.

Now, you can probably deduce from Graveman’s final line (2IP, 8 hits, 7 runs, 0 strikeouts, 40 pitches) what went down, but I’ll get into the nitty-gritty just for fun.

In the bottom of the first, Denard Span grounded out (call confirmed on replay in the A’s’ favor for once). Cue the hit-fest: Ryder Jones Singled, Brandon Belt doubled (and was almost tagged out by an absolute laser from Chad Pinder), Buster Posey singled, then Brandon Crawford singled. 2-0 Giants. Hunter Pence grounded out. Jarret Parker doubled, Graveman intentionally walked Joe Panik, then pitcher Ty Blach grounded out. 4-0 Giants.

Blach retired the A’s in order to constitute the top of the second inning.

Span doubled to begin the bottom of the 2nd and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jones singled, scoring Span, then Belt homered. 7-0 Giants.

That would be the end of Kendall Graveman’s night. Ray Fosse suggested he may have been tipping his pitches, which is probably just a more exciting name for “rusty coming off the DL.” I’m not worried yet about his future, but Jose Canseco ruthlessly said he looked like a double-A pitcher — at best — on the postgame show.

Maxwell walked to start the third. Mark Canha pinch-hit for Graveman and flied out, Rajai Davis stuck out, and Semien flied out.

Simon Castro came out of the A’s bullpen in the bottom. He retired the Giants in order with quite the assist from Pinder in right.

Jed Lowrie singled to start the bottom of the fourth; Khris Davis followed with a single of his own. Healy popped out, Pinder struck out looking, but Matt Chapman brought Lowrie home with another single. Maxwell grounded out to end the inning.

Castro again sent the Giants down 1-2-3 in the bottom half.

Unfortunately, the A’s were quiet it the top of the fifth.

The most lovable winless starter in the MLB came out of the bullpen for the A’s in the bottom half. Posey and Crawford both grounded out, but Hunter Pence doubled (again, despite a good throw to second from Pinder). Parker got in on the action with his second double of the night (he’s now 10-for-20 against the A’s this year). 8-1 Giants. Finally, I do love a good rakin’ pitcher, but watching Ty Blach his his first Major League homer (a three-run shot) was not great. 11-1 Giants.

A’s went down easy in the 6th; so did the Giants.

Pinder singled to start the 7th, in that there was a hilarious miscommunication between Joe Panik and Carlos Moncrief that allowed Pinder’s would-be popout to drop. A’s bats were otherwise quiet.

Smith came out again for the 7th, escaping unscathed save another Jarret Parker hit — a single.

Chris Smith(!) popped out to start the 8th. To follow, Rajai Davis drilled a homer just over the left field wall. Semien flied out; Lowrie grounded out. 11-2 Giants.

Despite a walk and a single, Smith kept the Giants off the board in the bottom half.

In the 9th, Cory Gearrin replaced Blach, who threw 8 impressive innings on 104 pitches. Khris Davis and Ryon Healy struck out swinging. Chad Pinder got aboard thanks to Ryder Jones tripping over his own two feet: that’s more like the 2017 Giants we know and love [to hate]. Matt Chapman grounded out to end the game.

Final: Giants 11, A’s 2.

Well, with the game lasting only 2 hours and 28 minutes, at least we didn’t waste that much of our lives.

The A’s will head to Anaheim to face Mike Trout tomorrow night. Yay baseball.
