Washington, D.C. – In a surprising turn of events, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have raised concerns about Republicans promoting a “whistleblower” who is now facing serious criminal charges. In a letter addressed to committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), Representatives Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) expressed their worries about the alleged whistleblower’s credibility and integrity.
The whistleblower in question, Gal Luft, an Israeli-American dual citizen, has recently been charged with acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government. Federal prosecutors unsealed an eight-count indictment against Luft on Monday, revealing his alleged involvement in illegal activities. Luft had claimed to possess compromising information about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, which he shared in a video published by the New York Post last week.
The allegations made by Luft revolve around Hunter Biden’s consulting work for officials connected to a Chinese energy conglomerate called CEFC China Energy in 2017 and 2018. It has been previously reported that Hunter Biden had an agreement to provide legal representation for an official who was later indicted for bribery in Chad and Uganda. However, the official ultimately chose a different representative.
Luft himself had worked for CEFC, and prosecutors allege that he was used to recruit and “educate” former CIA director James Woolsey to make statements favorable to China. Luft’s arrest in February and subsequent release led him to claim that the charges against him were an attempt to hinder his testimony to the Oversight Committee. However, the recent indictment has raised doubts about his credibility.
Democrats on the committee, Raskin and Goldman, expressed their concerns in the letter to Chair Comer, suggesting that the committee may have been manipulated by Luft, who is currently a fugitive from justice. They questioned whether the committee had been “duped” and urged Comer to investigate the matter further. They also requested any material that Comer had received from Luft.
The accusations made by Raskin and Goldman highlight the potential risks associated with promoting a whistleblower who may have ulterior motives. They raised concerns about Luft’s self-interest and the possibility that he may be working to undermine U.S. security interests and the President of the United States on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party.

In response to the Democrats’ letter, Comer defended his interactions with Luft, emphasizing the irony that one of the charges against Luft was the same as what Republicans have accused the Bidens of – being unregistered foreign agents. Comer suggested that if Luft’s association with CEFC makes him untrustworthy, then the same should apply to the Bidens.
The ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged whistleblower has further deepened the divide between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats are now questioning the Republicans’ judgment in promoting Luft and are calling for a thorough investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Republicans are standing their ground, suggesting that the Democrats have either been deceived by the Bidens or are intentionally misleading the American people.
