Arsenal set to appoint Unai Emery after Gunners board vote unanimously against Mikel Arteta

Unai Emery is expected to be announced as Arsenal’s new manager in a press conference later this week after the Gunners board voted unanimously against the appointment of Mikel Arteta.

Arteta had been the favourite to replace Arsene Wenger and the Spaniard was keen to take the job after provisional talks with the Gunners.

However, Arsenal went cold on the idea of appointing Arteta and the board believe they need a manager with greater experience to steer them post-Wenger.

According to the BBC, Arsenal voted unanimously in favour of appointing Emery and the Spaniard will be unveiled later this week.

Emery was sacked as PSG boss earlier this month after failing to guide the French giants past the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

The 46-year-old is best known for his work at Sevilla, where he guided the Spanish giants to three Europa League titles in four years.

Emery won five trophies in Paris but the French club were humiliated when Barcelona turned round a 4-0 aggregate score to knock PSG out of the Champions League last year.

Arsenal’s decision to opt for Emery raises question marks over Arteta’s future at Manchester City.

The former Arsenal skipper believes he’s ready for management and he only has a year left on his deal at the Eithad.

Emery is not fluent in English but the Arsenal board did not consider it to be a big enough problem to vote against his appointment.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, Raul Sanllehi and recruitment chief Sven Mislintat led the Gunners’ search for a new boss and decided on Emery.
