In a recent development surrounding the crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) and a prominent APC chieftain, has strongly refuted claims that former Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, ordered party members to vote against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming 2023 presidential election. Eze dismissed these allegations as a smear campaign orchestrated by Tony Okocha, whom he accused of spreading falsehoods.

Addressing the media, Eze emphasized that Okocha’s claims were baseless and fabricated, driven by personal motives to please his paymasters. It is important to note that Okocha was not a member of the APC during the election period and therefore had no insight into the party’s internal workings.

Furthermore, Eze commended the APC’s National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, for his refusal to entertain what he referred to as Wike’s conflict mercenaries, including Okocha and his associates, who had approached him seeking approval for a campaign of calumny against Amaechi and the mainstream APC state executive in Rivers.

The delegation, led by Okocha, had visited the APC’s National Secretariat with the intention of gaining Ganduje’s support for their agenda. However, they were disappointed when Ganduje urged them to avoid exacerbating tensions and instead allow the party’s central leadership to address the issues affecting the party in the state and find a resolution. Ganduje emphasized the need for unity within the party.

Eze reiterated that neither Wike, Okocha, nor any member of their circle possessed the authority to remove Amaechi from the APC. He emphasized Amaechi’s unwavering leadership position within the party.

The Rivers APC crisis has been a matter of concern for the party, as internal conflicts threaten to destabilize its stronghold in the state. Amaechi, a prominent figure within the APC, has faced opposition from various factions seeking to undermine his influence.

The allegations made by Okocha and his associates are seen as an attempt to tarnish Amaechi’s reputation and weaken his position within the party. However, Eze’s swift response and clarification have shed light on the falsehoods being spread.

The crisis within the Rivers APC has wider implications for the party’s prospects in the upcoming 2023 presidential election. As one of the largest states in Nigeria, Rivers carries significant political weight, making it crucial for the APC to maintain a united front.

The role of the media in accurately reporting on political developments cannot be underestimated. It is crucial for journalists to verify information and present a balanced perspective to the public. In this case, Eze’s statement has shed light on the false claims made by Okocha and his associates, allowing the public to make informed judgments.
