In a strong condemnation, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its outrage at the recent invasion and killing in Opu-Nembe, Bayelsa State. The party has alleged that the motive behind this heinous act was to instill fear in the people and prevent them from freely exercising their democratic right to vote for a candidate of their choice in the forthcoming governorship election.

The PDP, known for its commitment to democracy and the welfare of the people, has raised concerns about the resort to violence in Bayelsa State, particularly in light of the rejection of a particular candidate in the upcoming November 11, 2023 election. This disturbing trend of attacks on communities has been observed in previous elections as well, including the 2019 governorship poll.

According to reports, a policeman and civil defense personnel were recently apprehended at a military checkpoint in Otakeme, Ogbia Local Government of the State. They were allegedly accompanying armed men to Nembe, further fueling suspicions of a coordinated effort to disrupt the peace. The PDP has also highlighted allegations in the public domain, suggesting the involvement of high-ranking police personnel in aiding this reprehensible scheme to forcefully gain control of Opu-Nembe.

Undeterred by these acts of violence, the resilient people of Bayelsa State have rallied behind Governor Diri, demonstrating their unwavering support. They are determined to resist any attempts by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine their democratic rights. The PDP firmly believes that the people of Bayelsa will overwhelmingly vote for Governor Diri and remain steadfast in defending their votes until the very end. This resolute determination leaves no room for doubt.

In light of these grave concerns, the PDP has called upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to launch a thorough investigation into the petitions filed by the people of Nembe. It is imperative to identify and apprehend the thugs and killers responsible for the recent mayhem unleashed on the community. The PDP believes that justice must be served and that those responsible for these acts of violence must face the full force of the law.

As the PDP continues to champion the cause of democracy and the rights of the people, it remains committed to ensuring that the voices of Bayelsans are heard and respected. The party urges the IGP to act swiftly and decisively in addressing these concerns, thereby restoring peace and security to the affected communities.

With its long-standing reputation as a reliable and credible political party, the PDP remains resolute in its pursuit of justice and the preservation of democratic values. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, emphasized the urgency of the situation and called on all relevant stakeholders to join hands in safeguarding the electoral process and protecting the rights of the people.
