The Super Falcons of Nigeria fought hard to secure a draw against Ethiopia in their 2024 Olympics second-round qualifying contest at the Abebe Bekila Stadium, Addis Ababa, on Wednesday. The game was a thrilling encounter that saw both teams give their all in a bid to secure a win.

The match started with Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala missing an early chance for the Super Falcons. The home team, Ethiopia, took the lead through Birkie Amare in the sixth minute, leaving the Nigerian team trailing behind.

The Super Falcons struggled to get going on the bumpy pitch, but Oshoala and Gift Monday combined at the half-hour mark, with the former failing to direct her shot on target. The Nigerian team continued to push forward, but it seemed like luck was not on their side.

However, Atletico Madrid forward Rasheedat Ajibade equalized for Nigeria six minutes into the second half, much to the delight of the Nigerian fans who had traveled to Addis Ababa to support their team.

The Super Falcons continued to pile on the pressure, with substitute Ifeoma Onumonu having a goal ruled out for offside in stoppage time. Despite their efforts, the Nigerian team had to settle for a draw, which was a fair result given the performances of both teams on the day.

The two teams will clash in the reverse fixture at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on Tuesday, October 31. The Super Falcons will be looking to secure a win in front of their home fans, while Ethiopia will be hoping to cause an upset and progress to the next round of the competition.

The overall winner of the tie will face Cameroon or Uganda in the third round of the qualifiers. This means that the Super Falcons will have to be at their best if they hope to progress to the next round of the competition.

The Super Falcons have a rich history in African football, having won the African Women’s Cup of Nations a record 11 times. They will be hoping to add an Olympic gold medal to their collection in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
