Seun Kuti Claims “Lagos is White Man’s Land”

In a recent Instagram live session with fans, Grammy-nominated afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, made a controversial statement asserting that “Lagos is white man’s land.” The son of the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti, expressed his frustration with the recent trend of various Nigerian ethnic groups claiming ownership of Lagos, stating that the majority of the city’s real estate and wealth is actually owned by foreigners.

Kuti lamented that the economy of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole is being controlled by “foreigners,” and urged his fans to look beyond the surface and recognize the true owners of the land and wealth in the city.

“Why are you guys shouting, ‘Lagos is Igbo land, Lagos is Yoruba land?’ Lagos is a white man’s land,” Kuti said. He went on to challenge his audience to visit the Ministry of Land in Lagos and see for themselves how much of the land is owned by the Yoruba people. He also pointed out the control of the oil industry in Nigeria, emphasizing that it is predominantly in the hands of foreigners.

Kuti highlighted specific examples to support his claims, such as the ownership of Eko Hotel, one of the most expensive real estate properties in Lagos. He questioned, “Is it you? Now, Eko Atlantic is an extension of Eko Hotel, owned by the same foreigners.”

The singer’s comments have sparked a debate among Nigerians, with many expressing both support and disagreement with his views. Some have applauded Kuti for shedding light on what they perceive as a hidden truth, while others have criticized his statements as divisive and lacking in nuance.
