In a recent interview with media personality Toke Makinwa, renowned Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo opened up about her personal experience with poverty, which she revealed she first encountered when she got married to her ex-husband, Ademidun Ojo.

Ojo, known for her outstanding performances on the big screen, shared her journey of being married to the father of her two children and the financial challenges she faced during that period.

Reflecting on her early days with her husband, Ojo admitted, “When I went to my husband’s house for the first time, I didn’t even know there were face-me-I-slap-you apartments.” She went on to explain that her privileged upbringing shielded her from the harsh realities of poverty. “Most times, don’t blame the rich when they don’t understand the problems of the poor because I never knew what poverty was all about,” she added.

Growing up in a comfortable household, Ojo enjoyed the luxuries of life, including an industrial generator that ensured uninterrupted power supply. She reminisced about her grandmother, who was one of the wealthiest women of her time. Ojo even had her own car, which chauffeured her to and from school.

However, everything changed when she tied the knot with her ex-husband. Initially, Ojo viewed their financial struggles as an adventure, but soon realized the harsh reality of their situation. “The only time I experienced poverty was when I married my ex-husband,” she confessed. “Initially, it was fun. It was like an adventure. At 18, I had an account opened for me because my grandfather had done his will in such a way that money was being paid to the grandchild’s account. I had money. You can imagine that, as of 1997/1998, I had about N100,000 in my account.”

Ojo’s candid revelation sheds light on the often overlooked challenges faced by individuals who marry into financial difficulties. Despite her initial optimism, she soon realized that her financial independence was compromised, and she had to navigate unfamiliar territory.

The actress’s story serves as a reminder that poverty can affect anyone, regardless of their background or previous privileges. Ojo’s willingness to share her experience not only humanizes her but also highlights the resilience and determination she displayed in overcoming these hardships.
