NDLEA Arrests 352 Suspects and Seizes 2.1 Tonnes of Illicit Drugs in Kano State
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported the arrest of 352 suspects and the seizure of 2.1 tonnes of illicit drugs in Kano State between January and March 2023. The NDLEA Commander in Kano, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday, April 6.
According to Idris-Ahmad, the suspects arrested were made up of 208 males and 44 females. Among the drugs seized were 955.304 kg of cannabis sativa, 1,225.05 kg of Codeine and Tramadol, 25 grammes of cocaine, 17 grammes of heroine, and 52 grammes of methamphetamine.

The commander also expressed the NDLEA’s difficulty in convincing communities to expose peddlers of illicit drugs in their midst. Idris-Ahmad highlighted that drug users and traffickers’ activities have continued to negatively impact society. He stated that it is essential to educate communities on the dangers of drugs and encourage them to provide useful information on the hideouts of drug users or peddlers.
Idris-Ahmad appealed to the public to provide timely and helpful information to the NDLEA command to ensure a drug-free society. The NDLEA commander called on the Nigerian public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug use and trafficking.
The NDLEA’s efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria have been commendable in recent years. In January 2023, the agency arrested a drug kingpin and seized 1,015.4kg of cannabis, 1.4kg of cocaine, and 275.9kg of codeine and tramadol in Kano State.

Drug abuse remains a significant concern in Nigeria, with the youth population most affected. The NDLEA’s efforts to fight drug trafficking have been boosted by the recent passage of the National Drug Control Master Plan (NDCMP) 2021-2025. The NDCMP aims to address drug use and trafficking in Nigeria by adopting a multi-dimensional approach that involves preventing drug abuse, treating drug dependence, and controlling drug trafficking.
In conclusion, the NDLEA’s successful operations in Kano State highlight the agency’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria. The NDLEA continues to call on the Nigerian public to provide useful information to help achieve a drug-free society.
