Lionel Messi has won a record-equalling fourth Golden Shoe after finishing the season as the top scorer in Europe with 37 goals.
The Argentina international claimed the prize for a fourth time, matching Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s record haul.
With the Golden Shoe ranking working on a points basis, which weights the strength of Europe’s leagues, Messi’s goals earned him 74 points.
That put him six points clear of Sporting Lisbon’s Bas Dost, who scored 34 times for 68 points, and 12 ahead of third-placed Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (31 goals, 62 points).
Ronaldo, in contrast, had a relatively modest goal return by his own remarkable standards, scoring 25 times in La Liga – although the Portuguese helped and upcoming Champions League final appearance.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane, the Premier League’s top scorer, finished joint-fifth, with his 29 goals earning 58 points, level with Roma’s Edin Dzeko.
