Music icon Lady Gaga delivered some choice words after her A Star Is Born co-star Bradley Cooper was passed over for an Academy Award nom for best director.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times published on Jan. 22, 2019, Lady Gaga reacted to Bradley Cooper’s absence from the nominations for best directing. “Well, you know, you never know what’s going to happen. But at the end of the day, he knows that he’s the best director in my eyes, and in all of our eyes as his cast,” Gaga shared (via E! News). “I know that he’s so happy that we’ve all been nominated and that the film was recognized and we all feel really, really beyond elated for the recognition.”
Previously, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, actress Tracee Ellis Ross and comedian Kumail Nanjiani announced the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards. A Star Is Born snagged quite a few nods, earning a coveted place among other films in the category for best picture. Lady Gaga, who played Ally in A Star Is Born, was nominated for best actress in a leading role, while Bradley Cooper, who portrayed Jack, found himself nominated for best actor in a leading role. However, Cooper notably did not receive a nomination for directing the popular 2018 film.
Instead, Roma‘s Alfonso Cuarón, BlacKkKlansman‘s Spike Lee, Cold War‘s Pawel Pawlikowski, The Favourite‘s Yorgos Lanthimos, and Vice‘s Adam McKay were nominated for the year’s best directing.
So, just how does Cooper feel at being left out of the directing category? Well, he doesn’t seem to be too heartbroken about it, as, in a statement obtained by E! News, he focused on the success that the film did achieve. “Everyone who worked on this film truly risked putting themselves out there—in the hope that in doing so people will connect and feel something deep and personal—the way films have made me feel since I was a kid,” the actor said. “When I got this opportunity I knew I had to risk it all because I may never get another chance—so to be here today in a place where people who have seen the film are talking about how it makes them feel, something deep—that simple human thing—that we need each other—and the Academy to recognize that this morning—I just am so grateful.”
Something tells us that Cooper will get another chance to win a best directing Oscar in the years to come.
