Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have brought a new professional chapter into their long relationship story. Their October appearance at the Sitges Film Festival centred on Family Movie, a horror comedy involving the couple and their children. The project gives a familiar Hollywood marriage a more specific present-day subject: making something together, with family members working on both sides of the camera.

The festival’s October 11 report describes Bacon, Sedgwick and their son Travis discussing the film in Sitges. Its premise follows a family making a low-budget horror production when a body appears on the set. That fictional emergency belongs to the film. The real story is a creative collaboration, and it should not be confused with the behaviour or relationships of the characters.

Wowplus covered a much earlier milestone in its 2017 report on their 29th wedding anniversary. Nine years later, the useful update is more than another count of years. Their current work shows how two established careers can intersect without either being reduced to the role of a famous person’s spouse.

The relationship grew around acting

The couple discussed their beginnings in their own words on PBS’s Finding Your Roots. Sedgwick recalled briefly meeting Bacon after seeing him in a play when she was young. The programme distinguished that encounter from their later meeting as fellow actors in Lemon Sky. Keeping those moments separate avoids turning a childhood memory into a misleading account of how their adult relationship began.

Their recollections also resisted an entirely polished romantic script. Bacon described an immediate attraction when they worked together; Sedgwick recalled taking longer to warm to him. Those accounts are personal memories, not an instruction manual for other couples. They do, however, give the timeline more texture than a photograph presented as proof that everything was effortless from the start.

Over the years, the relationship has existed alongside different professional identities. Sitges’ programme places Bacon’s work in films such as Tremors, Apollo 13 and Mystic River beside Sedgwick’s film career and her role in The Closer. The point of that list is not to compare their achievements. It is to recognise the experience each performer brings to a shared production.

Bacon’s connection with horror also has a recent place in the Wowplus archive, including the listing for They/Them from 2022. Family Movie enters that broad part of his career with a different emphasis. Here, filmmaking itself becomes part of the subject, allowing a family of performers to play with the practical and emotional pressures of creating a production.

What the family project brings together

The official Sitges account says screenwriter Dan Beers met the family members individually before they read the script. The report describes them recognising familiar dynamics in the result. That is a useful explanation of the creative process, while leaving an important boundary intact: recognisable details do not make a fictional horror comedy a documentary about their home.

The SXSW programme credits Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Sosie Bacon and Travis Bacon among the cast. It also lists Travis for music and names Dan Beers as screenwriter. Those concrete contributions help explain the family element more clearly than the general observation that their children are involved. Acting, writing and music are different tasks within the same production.

Festival listings are useful for establishing credits and screenings, but they are not automatically a guide to a viewer’s local cinema or streaming service. A Sitges presentation should not be mistaken for a confirmed worldwide release date. Anyone interested in watching the film should check the distributor or local listings when availability is announced for their country.

There are other ways for long-term partners to keep creative work in their shared lives. Our look at Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s separate creative careers explored another version. Bacon and Sedgwick’s current project is distinctive because it places members of the family inside one production, making collaboration visible in the work itself.

A public chapter with private boundaries

A festival conversation can reveal how a project was developed, which roles people took and what they hoped to make. It cannot settle every question about a marriage. Reading the Sitges appearance through its confirmed professional details is more useful than treating a red-carpet gesture or a short interview clip as access to the couple’s entire private life.

It also makes room for Sedgwick as an artist in her own right. Her experience as a performer, producer and director belongs in the discussion of a joint project. Likewise, Sosie and Travis have credited jobs rather than simply appearing as supporting figures in their parents’ relationship timeline. A family name may attract attention, but the film still depends on people carrying out particular kinds of work.

For readers returning to a relationship first covered here years ago, that is the meaningful change. The old anniversary report marked a personal milestone; this autumn’s festival appearance documents a new shared undertaking. The timeline continues through a film, a set of credited collaborators and a public conversation about making it, with the rest of family life remaining theirs to describe.
