Jeopardy!’s Season 40 to Feature Second Chance Tournament and Increased Prizes Amid Writers’ Strike

In an exciting announcement, Michael Davies, the showrunner of Jeopardy!, revealed that the popular game show will continue with its milestone 40th season. However, due to the ongoing writers’ strike, the show will be using a combination of old questions and former contestants to keep the competition alive. This bold move aims to maintain the integrity of the show while also giving deserving contestants another shot at playing on the iconic Alex Trebek Stage.

During a recent episode of his “Inside Jeopardy!” podcast, Davies explained the reasoning behind this decision. “It wouldn’t be fair to debut new contestants on the show using non-original material or a mix of pre-strike and non-original material,” he said. “We wanted to extend an invitation to those players who thought their chance to play on the Alex Trebek Stage was gone forever.”

To create a dynamic mix of questions, Jeopardy! will rely on material created by the show’s Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers before the strike, as well as questions from previous seasons. This blend will ensure a familiar yet fresh experience for both contestants and viewers alike.

Originally, the show had planned for its annual “Tournament of Champions” before the strike began in May. However, some participants, including the highly regarded 13-time winner Ray LaLonde, chose not to participate in support of the writers’ guild. LaLonde, expressing his devotion to Jeopardy! and his support of the trade union movement, stated that he would not cross a picket line to play in the tournament.

With no resolution in sight for the strike, the Jeopardy! team made the difficult decision to put the “Tournament of Champions” on hold and instead launch a “second chance tournament” for contestants who lost in Season 37. The winners of this tournament will then advance to the “Champions Wild Card,” a thrilling new twist that promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Davies assured fans that the beloved “Tournament of Champions” will return as soon as the strike concludes, giving victorious contestants a chance to compete for ultimate glory.

In addition to these changes, Davies revealed another exciting update for Season 40. The prize fund for runner-ups will increase by $1,000 each, marking the first time in two decades that the prizes for second and third place have been raised.

“The third place prize will move up to $2,000, and the second place prize will move up to $3,000,” Davies announced. This decision came after listening to feedback from fans and contestants, and it is a testament to the show’s commitment to continually evolve and improve.

Fans can look forward to an exhilarating Season 40 of Jeopardy!, filled with unforgettable moments and nail-biting competition that have made the show a staple in television history.
