In a surprising turn of events, six local government chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State have tendered their resignations and are reportedly preparing to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to reliable sources. The news has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the state and raised questions about the future of the PDP in Ebonyi.
The sudden resignation of these six out of the 13 local government chairmen of the PDP is believed to be connected to the recent defeat of the party’s governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, in the election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja. Governor Francis Nwifuru emerged victorious in the tribunal, dealing a significant blow to the PDP’s hopes in the state.
The six PDP local government chairmen who have resigned are Agbom Friday (Ezza South), Nwofe Philip Don (lzzi), Nwobasi Ude Chizoba (Ohaozara), Chukwu Micheal O (lvo), Ifere Sunday Bright (lkwo), and Ndukwe Orji Oka (Afikpo South). Their decision to leave the party has sent shockwaves through the PDP, leaving many wondering about the implications for the party’s future.

In a letter addressed to the party and made available to the press, the six chairmen cited personal reasons for their resignations. While they did not explicitly mention their intention to join the APC, sources close to the situation have indicated that they are preparing to defect to the ruling party.
The news of the resignations has sparked a heated debate among political analysts and observers in Ebonyi State. Some argue that the defection of these local government chairmen could have serious ramifications for the PDP, as it may lead to a domino effect, with more party members defecting to the APC. Others, however, believe that the impact of this move may not be as significant as it initially appears, as some of the chairmen are allegedly not active members of the PDP in the state.
Reacting swiftly to the news, Augustine Nwazunku, the Chairman of the PDP in Ebonyi State, called on the public to disregard the resignations, claiming that some of the chairmen are not even active members of the party. He accused them of engaging in anti-party activities and criticized their decision to make public announcements without following the proper procedure for resigning from the party.
Nwazunku stated, “Those persons are acting haphazardly and getting themselves into anti-party activities because there is a normal process for resigning in the party. And none of them are members of Ebonyi State caretaker committee executives to unilaterally jump up and start granting frivolous public discussion that they have done this and that.”
He further added, “Many of them are no longer members of our party. None of them are members of our executives. What they are doing is an informal trick to mislead the members of the public. For example, the chairman of Ezza South was sometime ago suspended by his ward and local government.”
Nwazunku’s response has only added fuel to the fire, with critics arguing that his dismissal of the resignations as insignificant is an attempt to downplay the potential impact on the PDP. The public is now left to decide whom to believe in this increasingly tense political drama.
As the news of the resignations spreads, political observers are closely watching the developments in Ebonyi State. The defection of these local government chairmen, if it materializes, could have far-reaching consequences for the PDP, as it may weaken the party’s structure and support base in the state. On the other hand, if the resignations are indeed insignificant, as claimed by the PDP chairman, it could be a blow to the credibility of the defectors and the APC.
The coming days will undoubtedly shed more light on the situation as political alignments and realignments continue to shape the political landscape of Ebonyi State. The PDP and APC will be closely monitoring the situation, aware that every move matters in the battle for political dominance. The fate of the PDP in Ebonyi hangs in the balance, and only time will tell whether this defection will be a turning point in the state’s political history.
