Canadian diver Mia Vallée captures silver for 2nd medal at world championships

Canadian diver Mia Vallée jumped back on the podium at the world aquatics championships on Saturday in Budapest, Hungary.

The Beaconsfield, Que., native earned her second podium of the event, and the country’s third in diving, with silver in the women’s three-metre springboard final.

Vallée, who also captured bronze in Wednesday’s one-metre springboard, finished with 329.00 points.

“A result has never come as more of a surprise in my life,” Vallée said. “I seriously thought I was in sixth [or] seventh place. I did not think I had a chance at a medal at all even if I nailed the dive.

“I just wanted to make myself proud and that’s what was going though my head. I think that’s what I did and it gave me the silver medal so I couldn’t be happier.”

The 21-year-old sat in fifth after three dives Saturday, but moved up to third on her fourth effort, before climbing another spot on the final attempt with a score of 66.00.

China’s Yiwen Chen won gold with 366.90 points, while compatriot Yani Chang finished just behind Vallée in third with 325.85.
