Burna Boy Mulls Over Starting a Family: “I Think I’m Getting Old”

Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Nigerian artist whose real name is Damini Ogulu, recently opened up about something pretty personal during his 34th birthday celebration in Lagos. It seems like the idea of having kids is finally crossing his mind. Yeah, even someone as busy and successful as Burna Boy is feeling the pressure—or maybe just the natural pull—towards starting a family.

During the party, he shared that conversation with Jowizaza, a well-known figure in the oil business, really got him thinking about life and where he’s heading. “Na so Jowizaza follow me talk the last time, I come dey think about my life. Omo, I no dey young again, I for begin born pikins,” he said, using his natural pidgin English. There’s something about the casual way he said it—that mix of humor and maybe a little bit of seriousness—that makes this moment feel genuine, like he’s just having a real talk with friends.

Reflecting on Fatherhood: Then and Now

Now, what’s really interesting is that this isn’t Burna Boy’s first time addressing the topic of children. If you remember, last year, he was quite clear that he wasn’t ready for that step quite yet. Back then, he said he couldn’t give kids the attention they deserve. Obviously, being a global superstar isn’t exactly a 9-to-5 job, and it’s easy to imagine how hectic life must be for him. Commitments, recording sessions, tours—it all probably feels like a whirlwind.

But here’s the thing; people change. Priorities shift. Even in the music industry, where the spotlight can be blinding, you find moments where the bigger picture sneaks in. So, hearing Burna Boy talk about “getting old” might sound simple, maybe even a bit funny, but it’s also quite touching. It’s like he’s realizing that no matter how busy or successful you are, some parts of life can’t be put off forever.

You could say he’s at a crossroad of sorts. On one hand, the fast-paced life of an international music star; on the other, the quieter, more grounded world of family. It’s not always an easy balance, and I think many people can relate to that feeling—even if their “big choices” aren’t as public or dramatic.

But what caught my attention is the little hesitation in his words. He didn’t say, “I will have kids soon.” Instead, it was more like, “I think I should start.” It leaves space for uncertainty, doubt, or maybe just the possibility that plans might change again. And that, ironically, is what makes it feel human—he’s not rushing into anything or making promises, just admitting the thought is there now.

The Pressure of Time and Life’s Unexpected Turns

Is Burna Boy alone in feeling this? Probably not. There’s this subtle but powerful pressure many people feel as they get older, especially in cultures where family is a big deal. Sometimes it’s internal, sometimes it’s from friends, family, or even society. And I guess for someone like Burna Boy, who’s been in the spotlight since he was young, that pressure might hit in waves.

There’s also a broader story here about balancing personal dreams and responsibilities. I mean, it’s easy to imagine the conflict: Do you keep chasing your career and passions or settle down and embrace a very different kind of fulfillment that comes with raising children? Maybe the answer isn’t clear-cut—no matter what celebrities or anyone else might say.

At the end of the day, Burna Boy’s openness about his changing thoughts feels refreshing. It’s like a reminder that no matter how much someone shines on stage, they still face the same ups and downs we all do—just in front of more eyes.
