In 2007, Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt embarked on a noble mission to help those in need by founding the Make It Right Foundation. Inspired by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Pitt sought to rebuild the community in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana, by providing homes for those who had lost everything in the tragic event.

However, Pitt’s dreams of making a difference were soon overshadowed by controversy. In 2018, reports surfaced of a class-action lawsuit filed against the actor and his foundation, accusing them of unfair trade practices, breach of contract, and fraud. Despite attempts by Pitt’s legal team to distance him from the lawsuit, it was clear that the actor’s involvement in the project could not be ignored.

The homes built by the Make It Right Foundation were plagued with serious issues, including foundation problems, water leaks, and black mold, as reported by Dezeen. This news came as a shock to many, as the foundation was initially hailed as a beacon of hope for the community in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

In a surprising turn of events in 2022, Pitt and his foundation agreed to a $20.5 million settlement with residents, amounting to approximately $25,000 for each of the 107 homeowners on the site. The California-based nonprofit Global Green stepped in to cover the cost of the settlement, raising questions about the extent of Pitt’s involvement with the organization.

In a statement to Dezeen, Pitt expressed his gratitude for Global Green’s support, saying, “I am incredibly grateful for Global Green’s willingness to step up and provide this important support for the Lower Ninth families.” Despite the settlement, the dark shadow of controversy continues to loom over Pitt and the Make It Right Foundation.

The saga of Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation serves as a cautionary tale of the pitfalls of celebrity philanthropy. While the intentions may have been noble, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, as the saying goes. As the dust settles on this chapter of Pitt’s philanthropic efforts, the question remains: what will be the legacy of the Make It Right Foundation?
