Billboard Faces Backlash Over ‘One-Hit Wonder’ Label for Rema

The Ranking That Sparked Outrage

Billboard is facing heavy criticism online after referring to Nigerian superstar Rema as a “one-hit wonder.”

On February 16, 2026, the U.S.-based entertainment publication reshared a June 2025 chart feature on X, listing Rema at number six on its “25 Biggest One-Hit Wonders of the 21st Century.” The ranking centered on his global smash hit Calm Down, particularly the remix featuring Selena Gomez.

Chart Metrics vs. Broader Impact

In its explanation, Billboard noted that although Rema has not returned to the Hot 100 following the massive success of Calm Down, he has secured six top 10 entries on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart as of June 7, 2025.

The publication’s criteria appeared to focus strictly on performance within the Billboard Hot 100, which measures mainstream success in the American market. However, many fans argue that such a metric fails to capture Rema’s global influence and continued dominance within Afrobeats.

Fans Push Back

The resurfaced post quickly triggered backlash across social media, with critics calling the label dismissive and reductive.

Several users pointed out that Rema has consistently released charting songs, sold out arenas internationally, and played a major role in pushing Afrobeats further into the global mainstream. Others argued that defining an artist’s career solely by Hot 100 placements ignores international streams, touring success, and cultural impact.

Some reactions were particularly blunt, accusing the magazine of downplaying African artists’ achievements. Others defended Rema’s track record, highlighting that his catalog extends far beyond a single crossover hit.

A Bigger Conversation About Global Recognition

The controversy reflects a larger debate about how success is measured in today’s music industry. While Billboard rankings remain a major benchmark in the United States, the global rise of Afrobeats has shifted attention toward streaming numbers, international tours, and cross-continental collaborations.

For many fans, labeling Rema a one-hit wonder overlooks his sustained influence and the broader growth of African music worldwide.

Whether Billboard revisits the classification or not, the online reaction makes one thing clear: Rema’s supporters strongly disagree with the narrative.
